Hey guys, i've been thinking about something here lately. I have a 5.5HP Tecumseh OHV Step-Shaft. I was thinking about mounting a starter to my frame with a pulley welded on it, and mounting a pulley onto my shaft right beside my clutch. Using a belt drive, i would use the wiring system I have set up to start it with a 6V Lawnmower battery. Do you think this would be a good idea?

you may need a one way bearing unless you plan to spin the starter all the time

I was thinking about using a tensioner pulley as a clutch and mounting a shift control. I could hook it up to my lights to power them and runt he starter by shifting the clutch. When i dont want my lights on, i can just disengage the pulley and ride. also, if i keep the starter going at all times, it can charge my battery also. What do you think would be the better idea? Running a clutch with the starter to my lights? or hard line my starter to my battery?

to charge your battery i would suggest use of a voltage regulator.
using your starter motor as a generator will shorten its life , but by how much i dont know. the tensioner pulley should work good geared correctly.

If you look into older mower startes, they were actually designed to be a starter/generator with the voltage regulator built in! a 110 John Deere is a good example! not the 70's models but the 63-67's were great mowers with a 8-10hp Tecumseh or Kohler! The starters would be plenty strong enough to get you running!
