electric DC motor options?

Really hate to do this, but this is my first post. I don’t have a go-kart but I am planning on building one for my son. Before I start to plan to build one for him, Im planning on building an Electric DC motor type wagon for loading and unloading hunting gear. This will be a test project before I kick off on a real go-kart for my boy.

This wagon Im planning on building, I do NOT need it to be fast, just walking speed. Something I can just put equipment and transport it to another location. My equipment will vary from 100-150 pounds. Im planning on big garden tires on these since it will be use around lakes and the raining season. I want a live axle for better traction with mud. But what I can’t decide on is the type of motor for a walking speed? I don’t know what type to get and what sprockets to match it up with to get my desire speed. I know there is a speed calculator but everything is coming up to 15-25MPH, which I believe is too fast. Im also aware I can go out and buy one, but where’s the fun in that… =)

Im sorry for all the newbie questions but I’m really just getting into this type of hobby. I can weld, fabricate, and have access to many tools. Thanks in advance for you input and hope to post the progress on here.

Try looking into what a Jackshaft is. You can achieve much lower speeds because you can change the gear ratio even further.

Clutch/engine shaft goes to Jackshaft sprocket 1 (usually large e.g 20 tooth)

Jackshaft sprocket #2 (usually small, e.g. 9 tooth) goes to axle sprocket.

Being electric you do not have to run full throttle you can very the speed find a 1000 watt scooter motor and controller and you can run a larger sprocket on the drive axle and even if it goes faster than walking speed just not go full throttle. But if you need to power to get over some objects or through some gumbo mud then you got it in reserve. Plus once you put some batteries in it along with your gear it can get pretty hefty.

Step 1 decide how big your tires will be then pick your sprockets to achieve the overall speed you want.
