Electric barrel kart (budget barrel)

New go kart

So me and my best mate gokart99 (alex) are going to build an electric gokart but with a twist. We are building it so that u sit inside a barrel with the wheels stcking out. Any ideas or tips on what motors and stuff like that?? Can we use a car starter motor in any way?

BTW- You're not planning to take this down a certain river and going over a certain waterfall that's on the border are you? ???? :oops:

Is a 36v 800w scooter motor going to be too weak to pull me (50kg) at 15mph +? Could over volt to 48v but thats 4 batterys

So me and a friend, alex (gokart99) are wanting to build an electric gokart with a bit of a twist! We are planning it to be build in a water barrel with the wheels sticking out the sides but cant decide on a motor as we are only 13 and dont know masses on electrics (just what we have learnt on the internet in spare time). So any ideas on a motor? We are about 50kg each (only one in the kart at a time) and wanting to reach about 15mph but with decent power for up hills. We a
Are also on a budget as we are selling sweets at school, paper round and collecting and parts for it as we can (we might have got the barrel free already) so what motors? Any ideas? Also ideas on the gokart welcome too! We have found a 36v 800w motor, is that enough?

Have you maybe got a preliminary sketch for us to look at, just to focus our minds on what you are trying to do?

Have you read the sticky thread on electric engines in the electric section?

EDIT: I have merged your two threads and kept it in the electric section

I have seen a guy use a starter motor on a barstool and there was only one minor problem. It was all the way on or all the way off ! It did work well tho. But you drove on the wheelie bars and to turn you had to let off and coast. haha

car starters will get hot very fast (they're made to run maybe 10-15sec max)
most car starters don't even have bearings but bushings.

Yes it is possible, but it's neither a bolt on solution nor is it reliable.

It's great fun though if you can find a starter for a few cents and intend to ruin it anyways ;)

So if you want to try, get the cheapest possible starter for a car or truck
(no more than maybe $20 or whatever you feel you can waste for maybe an hour of fun)

Wanting a permenant one really. Would a 24v 350w over powered to 36v work?
Or is a 36v 800w better?

over volting isn't a good idea if
it's possible to find a motor made for your wanted or needed voltage.

So yes a 36V 800W motor is better.. MUCH better,
I'd say around three to four times better ;)

IIRC there's a 36V 1000W motor and if you want to spend more than just 100 you can even find a 1200 and a 1600W 36V motor.

What would use suggest as I am on a budget (budget barrel) is 36v 800w strong enough? For speeds of 15mph?

on a budget .. shoot for a my1020 1000W motor
it's the same price as for the 800W motor, with 25% more power ;)
(can be had for ~100€ or about £85)
and a matching controller (~30€ or about £25)

15mph.. that's 6.706 m/s.. let's just say 7 m/s

1000 W / 7 m/s = 142.86 N

let's assume a max road inclination of 5°
that's
142.86 N / 0.855 m/s² = ~167 kg

(0.855 -> sin(5) * 9.81 m/s²)

If you kart isn't heavier than 167 kg it will hit the 15mph target, yes :D
keep your tires small (11 or 12 inch diameter) to have a good acceleration

say 12"
1.2 * 167 * x² = 1000
means x² is roughly 5 so you can expect an acceleration of ~ 2.24 m/s²
(or in more understandable terms.. you reach about 5mph within one second)
with bigger wheels (say 15" dia) it's barely 2 m/s² (4.47 mph within a second)

NOTE:
accelerative resitance is much harder to calculate than what I just did,
these numbers are only a rough simplification, thus real world values will be different!
