i have a gy6 motor that just fried the voltage regulator.what would cause this i dont think it went bad on its own and i dont want to install a new one untill i find the problem

Those things are kind of giant electrical problems that haven’t happened yet. Whoever designed it must have been related to Joe Lucas, “The Prince Of Darkness”. Also known as Lucas Electric and inventor of smoke in a can, smoke in a jar, smoke in a wire, smoke in a box and any other smoke product you can think of. Sorry, I got nothing helpful.
What would give you reason to think it didn't just go bad on its own?
The RR's are a fairly common breakdown
These things are big heat producers.
They have cooling fins just like a engine that need air contact to move off the heat.
The base mounting is important as well, both for helping with the electrical grounding and for heat sinking to frame.
I have a theory that a lot of these manufactures don't respect the heat shedding.
They get a powerplant and stuff it into places that don't move cooling air.
The "electric box" often looks like an afterthought to fit in whatever space is left.
I think the RR can simply overheat and burn out.
Something you could do to increase reliability is to make sure the RR base and mounting area are clean and paintless.
Maybe slap down some dialectic grease to make good contact.
Maybe reposition or vent the electric box.

Relocating the RR to an exposed area to get better airflow is better than leaving it cooped up in a box to cook.
The only 3 ways I know to fry an RR would be... age/natural breakdown of diodes, severe power overload/custom wound stator, and a short in the ground(some get mounted to non metallic surfaces and have a ground wire hooked to one of their bolts). Like mentioned if there's not clean bare metal contact through the bolts at the very least, you'll have a grounding issue just as much if it has come any amount loose. An RR DOES NOT output anything with a ground to discharge the extra voltage into.
Other than that they just don't really smoke out unless it's a cheap POS unit which is all too common.
I feel it's worth asking, are you sure the RR is smoked and it's not a stator issue? It's fairly easy to test everything on the machine with a Multimeter before tearing into everything and buying possibly part you don't need and delaying repairs

thanks you all . im just going to replace the whole charging system.it is old i have pretty much replaced every thing else with new parts .paint lights .master cylender,rewired .over hauled motor..new carb .seats lights.tires.roll cage.tonight new break pads.while i wait for elec parts i ordered last night.All the replays were great . I even enjoyed the lucas electric..The v.r.is not in a electric box but the post about the heat is correct i might mount a cooling fan back their.its not going to get much air located just behined the seats. i will post a some before and after pics.this kart is going to be sold.I got a hammerhead twister150cc in about the same shape this crossfire was in when i picked it up maybe worse it was locked up i did get it unlocked but have not done anything else yet.Thanks again Denny

And you said you never owned a foreign vehicle. Or was that just " Car". Back when Japan only made 50cc motorcycles I owned a Norton, a Matchless, and a
BSA. The Matchless was the only one that had working lights. ( Lucas ) But they were fast for the time and a lot of fun.
