Hi, I'm building an elecrtic go kart and want to know if 48 volts at 1000 watts is enough power for 35MPH? Theese are the parts I'm going to buy:

48 volt 1,000 watt motor 189.95

heavy duty #25 chain 9.00

48 volt speed controller 47.95

foot pedal throttle 23.95

This is alot of money for me to spend and I would like to know I'm getting some speed out of it. Also, would those batteries get me good range? I would like a good twenty miles or so range. If you folkes have any suggestions on batts or motors it would be much help to the cause!!!:auto:

This has already been discussed many times.
22Ah is quite a good size for the power you want. But 1kW will definetly not be enough to go 35mph. Maybe you can combine two of these motors to get 2kW.

Darn, 1000 watts is the biggest motor on that site, two you say? I found same motor on TNC for 94.00, I geuss I could get two, but that mean I'd need more batteries.

Geuss it's time to look for a BIGGER MOTOR. Anyone got some suggestions?

Get a forklift motor. Geared right they have tons of torque and zip cars around to really high speeds! You can probably get a decent used one on ebay for around 200 bucks. Then you just need to get a sprocket machined to fit the splined shaft on it and your good. use a good quality controller and you should be all set. Some forklift motors run on the same voltage that you were gonna use with the motor above. Look around the forums at some other peoples build involving forklift motors. youll be surprised what you find.

First of all, things are quite different from electric scooters and karts to electric vehicles, in that the electric components (motor, controller, batteries) are far more powerful (and $$$) and since of the high currents the wiring is also different.
I recommend the excellent book Build Your Own Electric Vehicle

However building ekart will give some experience, in my opinion it does not worth to build a kart only for this purpose - go with the fuel.
Same like you, I am interested in EV and I am building a small ekart (link) but also for the reason of low power safety since its for a 4 years old and 350W is much less than 1000W (or even 50cc).
You can buy a small motor, controller and throttle and play with it on your desk, it will give you almost the same experience on the electric part as if you built the whole thing.
Another thing - beware of these controllers they are cheap for a reason, a decent controller would cost a lot more.

I have been messin with electronics since I was in elementry, I used to build really fast R/C cars using many dif R/C parts and popsicle stick as the frame(as you can geuss they never lasted long). I need experience in the real building, I need to make things sturdy so I know how hard I can push my frame and make sure I don't cook the controller or motor or batterys at high speed(I used to blow small motors all the time). I make next to nothing money wise so my budget is limited. I'm thinking of using one of those switch thingys you have in your home fuse box to switch the power from the controller directly to the motor while adding 12 volts or so.

I'm going to have to get somthing bigger than 1kw, I'm thinking around five or so, that should give me a peak HP of around 18 when I engage the over ride switch. I just need to find a cheap strong brushless motor! :sifone:

I just orderd that book from the library! I can't wait fot it to come in!:wai:

In maybe a year I'd like to convert a small pickup, they seem like they'd be ideal, or a streamlined station wagon that don't look really ugly. I've decided on an AC 32 HP motor for the truck, and around 96+volts.

You mean connecting the motor without speed control?

Keep in mind that 1hp = 735 watts and thus 18hp = 13KW

I just orderd that book from the library! I can't wait fot it to come in!:wai:

I mean a switch that will direct the charge around the controller, hooking the batteries directly to the motor (but only when I flip the switch).There's nothing cooler than a turbo switch on your go kart!


Hmmm, 735=1HP, good to know. If a motor is rated at 5kw, than it should be able to do short bursts at 15kw, about 18 HP. I plan on beating the crap outa this kart, test crashes, over volting, under volting, all terrian test drives. I need this information for my next build, I'ma rig a jon boat with wheels and a motor(like a duck boat), so I can sail down the wisconsin river and just drive it around the dams. Hoplefully I will have enough parts surving from the go kart to at least half build the duck. Then it's on to cars!:auto:
