Ok, let me tell a story here and ill get to my question. Me and a buddy both put our carts together knowing we will race them. Well mine might top out at 30, but his is doing close to 50. Im guessing. He has an 8hp briggs, mine a 9hp subaru. I do have a roll cage but that should not matter. The only difference between ours are motors, sprocket size, clutch's and rear end.

Now I have a solid live rear end POSI. his Is one wheel wonder. Now my clutch is a comet belt drive along with the coment secondary pully. His is chain driven from the clutch to the main, and to the secondary. What options do i have to leave some tattoo's on the pavement? I would like to be able to keep up if anything. I have a dingo, not sure of his but comparible. His rear sprocket is huge compared to mine.

Pick one of these things. If you want to do burnouts (and it doesn't now) then you need a bigger secondary sprocket or a smaller primary sprocket. If you want to keep up with your friend at top speed then get a smaller secondary or bigger primary.
You can't have top speed AND acceleration unless you get some sort of variable transmission (gearbox or CVT/torque convertor) or a more powerful engine.

If you want more top speed with no drawbacks then remove the governor from your engine (if it has one).
If both of your karts have the same weight, the same acceleration, but his has a faster top speed then it means that his engine is reaching higher RPM.

[rant] Don't anyone write RPM's, the plural of RPM is RPM, just like sheep or fish [/rant]

O hangon just remembered if you wan't to do burnout's put really slippery, thin tyres on it. They will get less traction so will spin more easily.

The roll cage could be making quite a difference in acceleration.

Put a smaller sprocket on your axle for more top speed / less acceleration.

Also, I would disconnect the governor if I were you. Make up a custom throttle; just don't go crazy on the revs and I'm sure it'll be fine. Stay something like 5k tops.

Where is the governor?
My small sprocket is 12 and the large one is a 54.
Maybe I need to race him in the dirt. Or on wet pavement. Since mine don't like to turn on pavement.

Unhook all throttle related items(including all those linkages and such), attach throttle directly to carb butterfly and add a return spring, be sure to set it up so when you floor it the butterfly is wide open and not over traveling.

Before playing around with the gearing, unhook the governor, THEN you can work out (using the speed calc. on this site) what gearing you want.

No matter what gearing you use, if his is ungoverned and yours still has the governor you cannot win.
