Ducar 212 fails to run

I took delivery of a used race kart today. It came with a Ducar 212. I tried to get it running but failed. We pulled and pulled and pulled... It started a couple times but died after 15 seconds. I checked the plug, looked ok. cleaned the inside of the carb. I suspect old gas, it has been sitting idle for a year.

Does anyone have a good checklist to work through for these situations?

Complete disassembly of the carb... Clean clean clean...
Maybe a lemon juice boil or two...

How's the fuel filter? (Is there a fuel filter?) Did you only try with the very old gas?

Be sure to drain the fuel out of the carb (and clean as mckutzy said) and visually inspect the inside of the gas tank. Sometimes they are hiding some nastiness that will repeatedly foul up a carb.
