I have a trailmaster mid xrx go cart with 6.5 hp and when I hit the gas the clutch attached to engine opens and engages but the driver clutch in which chain attaches to does not open. The engine revs at high rpm but the cart bucks a little and than goes about 5mph. I can open clutch by hand. Spring seems good.I put cart on stands and when reved up driver clutch is not opening. Any suggestions. Could this be from worn belt?

Just to make things clear, the one on the engine is your driver, the one with the chain is the driven.

Do you have some pictures?

Welcome.

I would remove the driveN unit and disassemble. Look for scoring on the parts that are supposed to slide. Something is being grabby and needs attention.

Pics help in diagnosing over the web.

maybe it's the wrong driven .. wrong spring or just prewound the wrong way around..

or most likely it's installed incorrectly...
generally a series 30 is the ONLY one that in stock config mounts OUTBOARD (i.e. the cam is pointing away from the engine)
A series 20 as well as a series 40 (unmodified) mount INBOARD (i.e. the cam is pointing towards the engine)

those two need a different spring which in turn needs to be preloaded in the opposite direction.
and only then those can run outboard and will open up properly.

The clutch on left is operating properly. I took off clean and lubed. The brass ring was there and all pieces are sliding free. One closer to tear is not opening.

So I just take driver off and install opposite way an it should be fine. Also is that belt supposed to be that loose?

Looks like a 30 series. The driven (rear) pulley has the same construction as the one in the video. Watch from the 3:55 mark and follow his instructions on cleaning and reassembly. You'll get it. Just remember, it's not working now so you can't hurt it!

Is the belt supposed to be that far into the driven pulley? Every torque converter I've seen has the belt right on the very edge of the pulley like in the picture. Does it make a difference? Maybe he needs a new belt?

So someone just took it apart, and put it back together wrong?

Nah you're right.. I was halluzinating or something..

'sid (removed my post above..)

PS If you install a correct TC belt and loose that cheap v-belt from the auto-store it'll probably work fine.

That's not a v belt. It's a worn tc belt. I installed a new tc belt and it runs great .
