how much slack is in the belt? with the belt off of the driven, twist and open it. when you have it as open as you can get it, fully release it like you are shooting a bow&arrows. if it doesn't close all the way back up, something is wrong with the slider bushing or the spring doesn't have enough tension. can you put up some pics? driven is to be closed at idle, driver open. you aren't by chance running a sym belt on an assym system or vice versa are you?

Not a good idea to let the two halves "crash" together.

sounds like the wrong belt. But its also may be that you didnt preload the spring in the proper direction. When its at rest the cams should be placed in the forward direction so that as you go faster the pulley has to ride backwards to reach full speed. If they are placed twords the back of the cam and ride up as soon as force is applied it is wrong.

So, here is an update.

The correct belt arrived and I put it on.

The problem remains much the same.

BUT, I did a little test. I put the kart on blocks and throttled the motor. The pulley worked perfectly, as intended. I switched back to the wrong belt. Same.

So, it is only happening when the kart is under load. When there is a driver in it and I watch the Driven upon acceleration, I can see it jumping back and forth...something that does NOT happen when the kart is on blocks.

I am going to make one of the lightboys up the street drive it to see whether the problem is the weight of the occupant.

a pic isn't going to show you quack unless it is a video

the Driven works properly when throttling withOUT any load. It opens under acceleration and closes when you back off the throttle.

When it is loaded, when someone is in the Kart and the wheels are on the ground, the driven jumps back and forth, open and close, as the kart accelerates. Once it is at speed, the driven operates normally.

I wanted to see a pic of the driven to see how it is resting on the cams.

check the fuel, it could be contaminated. most likely with water. when no load is on the engine, it pulls less than when there is a load. water sits at the bottom of the tank and carb, under heavy suction it can pull some water into the cylinder. causing the uneven burns which allow the driver to slip, which is seen in the driven as it is larger and easier to see. how old is the driven's spring? is it degraded in areas that would cause a reverse progression (progressive shocks have one coil spring that has harder and softer coils in the same unit)?

I am new here and had the same question and forgive me if i am wrong but I am pretty sure the Driven closes when under load. When under a load the Driven closes and acts like a transmission going into a lower gear due to the belt moving up on the wheel of the driven. T

After a little research I see i was wrong! I replaced a bad spring in the driven unit and everything is now working perfectly.
