Hey guys, is it a must that the drive sprocket be in front, of the axle sprocket. my motor is going to be solid mount, right over the rear end, so I won't need a tensioning wheel on the chain. the drive sprocket looks like it will be right over the axle spocket. with a short chain.

no, you don´t need a tensioner. but you will need to be able to move your motor forward and back to adjust the tension.

engine mounting

You can mount the engine like your talking. It was a normal thing years ago, the problem arose when the chain adjustment time came. If you can slide the engine forward and back to adust the slack needed, you can go this route for a bit.
The problem you will encounter is; a four cycle engine pulls hard every fourth cycle, which causes the chain to stretch (happens to all karts). The shorter chain will take a beating faster, get a good solid chain guard for when it goes.
