My dads boss got him a set of drill bits fro work... Didn't last worth a stink. He brought one home that got bent. Yes, bent... Made in China of course.

If you got drill bits that bend, you have a problem....
:roflol:

Doesn't hurt to shell out a bit more for quality tools IMHO.

Well....the bits I have don't bend..they snap....and also....I can resharpen bits....but as Pat pointed out....coated bits don't last as long when resharpened....

Fortunately....I mainly work with wood...and having a complete index is more important than quality....but I need some "go to bits" for tough jobs....

Now....I forewarned y'all not to get me started on stainless!!!!! But does Chancer listen????? Oh noooooo......hims gotta speakum his mind.....soooooo......jeeze...how DO you get a hole in stainless????

I mean....I DO have different caliber guns.....

:roflol: :roflol: :devil2: Try going so slow RPM wise that you think your Social Security will kick in before you finish the hole. Then, you need to keep the cut zone as cool as possible.

Stainless steel's of all type's are defined by the chromium content they have; that means they have varied speed's at which they work harden (if they weren't already heat treated). If you don't know the grade and how to work with it, your best (and maybe only option) is to go as slow as possible.

You can also increase your chances by using some form of cooling agent; and while there are many excellent industrial products out there, if you find yourself needing to hand drill holes in stainless, say on a late Sunday afternoon, you could do a lot worse than a cheap spray bottle full of tap water. Yes, it rusts anything not stainless, but it's low boiling point means it works great for pulling heat out of your work zone.

I'm only familiar with maybe a half dozen of the more common types; there's so many specialty ones out there that it can be mind baffling..... :surrender: :surrender:

One thing about stainless steel that I learned a long time ago is that when you use a center punch to make a locating mark the punch dimple compresses the metal and makes it even harder at the dimple, the drill will try to walk away from the hardened punch mark, I use my Dremel with a pointed carbide burr to make locating marks in the stainless steel and this eliminates the problem of the walking of the drill most certainly the smaller sizes.

Wait a minute.....take it slow....use plenty of lube....hardened bedframes.....

What were we talking about, again?????

Oh...sorry....my mind wanders.....my ex bent our bed rails....and she wasn't that big...maybe 200 max???? and me "buck and a half"....

But I guess together....that's 350 lbs....maybe we should have gotten in the middle of the bed before we got together....

Apparently White Settlement Texas is not as Podunk as I thought and they actually have a Home Depot!

Seriously though they charged you the 8.25% sales tax that San Diego, CA has! Is that right???

They did...but that's standard sales tax for White Settlement....

And White Settlement now has a hotel and a Hawaiian Falls water park....

But...no that's not it....

Nope....the 2 are titanium coated...(an one of those went through the bedrail like a hot knife through butter) the other more expensive one was some kind of "cryogenically" hardened bit I bought in case the other two failed....

So....that ain't it....
