Yeah, sorry.. variac is not exactly something I'd call an arduino to help for..
that 200lbs shop gorilla (who's -as you know- a huge fan of variac drives and arduinos might be the one to ask ;))
Sorry, from on top of my head I have no idea really..
but I'll think about ...

for now I'm with mckutzy a different motor might be the easiest solution (a universal motor
would only need a boosting circuit since it takes DC power as well as AC... 1600W leafblower 30 bucks new... 'nough power ;) no money' or as he said a three phase and just copy some RC ESC setup)
I will have to get those easy solutions out of my head first ;)

That's what I was thinking but the ESC still has to switch the same power for a brushless setup! ugh.. That SSR is coming today so we'll see how long it takes to blow it sky high >:D

I have a ridiculous induction motor for it, but that may end up on the shifter kart soon. You may find this interesting: the inverter for a Tesla.. It's flippn' gigantic!! Looks like a stack of big MOSFETs and fancy pixie wrangling doo dads..



This project will be on hold for a few days though, just got some linear actuators for a robo arm... So its time to study inverse kinematics (KMS)..

Ok so another update, about to pull the trigger on 100 more Li-Ion cells; also going to wire huge banks in parallel, then put them in series to get the required voltage. This way it's plug and play to add more packs and the leads will be short enough and large enough to keep resistance way down..
Batteries I'm buying have a low discharge rate, I'm running 15 in parallel so far but more than likely will double up and run 30 parallel.. Also This stuff may get put on the go kart because this trike is getting too small and can't hold the torque it will need to the ground.

Anywayz, I'm going to order a bulk of MOSFETs from china and build a custom BL ESC for this; yea it seems overkill to build when buying is cheap, I know. It's more because I want to be able to change timings, add regenerative braking, and also see if I can get away with lower voltages while running higher speeds by advancing the timing. Here are the MOSFETs it will be running, I have all the other discreet/power components kicking around the garage so these are the only thing I'll have to buy.
The batteries are pretty cheap for sure, optimistically about 1200mah a piece and a 1C discharge rate, bought 35 of them and so far they seem usable. I'm strongly considering buying 200 but I'm turboing my car right now so let's see where I throw fundage first ;)


Considering etching a fancy PCB but idk; funny part is that half the expense is these things: little battery holders I had to get these because they have large hardened steel stamped tabs that not only hold the battery secure but also handle a lot of current.

This detail seems minute but if anyone decides to do something like this I figure might as well keep it verbose and explanatory!
I'll be running the induction motors but will be looking for a BL permanent magnet motor with higher HP and lower internal resistance.
