Yeah, sorry.. variac is not exactly something I'd call an arduino to help for..
that 200lbs shop gorilla (who's -as you know- a huge fan of variac drives and arduinos might be the one to ask)
Sorry, from on top of my head I have no idea really..
but I'll think about ...
for now I'm with mckutzy a different motor might be the easiest solution (a universal motor
would only need a boosting circuit since it takes DC power as well as AC... 1600W leafblower 30 bucks new... 'nough powerno money' or as he said a three phase and just copy some RC ESC setup)
I will have to get those easy solutions out of my head first

That's what I was thinking but the ESC still has to switch the same power for a brushless setup! ugh.. That SSR is coming today so we'll see how long it takes to blow it sky high >
I have a ridiculous induction motor for it, but that may end up on the shifter kart soon. You may find this interesting: the inverter for a Tesla.. It's flippn' gigantic!! Looks like a stack of big MOSFETs and fancy pixie wrangling doo dads..
This project will be on hold for a few days though, just got some linear actuators for a robo arm... So its time to study inverse kinematics (KMS)..
