I didn't get to go this year.....I usually limit out. ...but my brother. .... (who also usually limits out).....only got 10.....west Texas......said Hubbard Creek was about dry.....and the landowner may have to move..... (no water)....

Yeah. ...we don't BS about drought in Texas....we've had a bad one this year.....especially west......

Sept.1 was opening day of dove season here in North Texas. .....

Hadn't checked since I couldn't go but the usual limit is 15 doves....

And a large part of the State has suffered severe drought. ...watering restrictions have gotten crazy and the lease owner has been informed he can no longer buy pipeline delivered water......

Of course it does. ...in many ways. ...first thing is that many a limit of dove have been taken sitting on a tank.... (a tank is a small man-made reservoir or pond usually built to hold water for cattle to consume)...and dove will feed in fields all day....but at some point go to a watering spot at some point in the day....

If the lease you are on had small tanks to start with and they dry up....the dove will go to a different area to get water....and maybe find everything else they need there and never even venture into the airspace above the lease you are hunting on.....

Then the natural seed plants....and the agricultural ones.....may not survive to produce seed....again. ...making the area less attractive to the dove....

Mortality of young resident dove will be higher in those areas as well.....

And while some dove are residents and live their whole lives never venturing more than a few hundred acres....they are none the less migratory birds. ...some as a matter of course. ... (that fly down from the north for the winter) ...and some just for greener pastures. ....

So. ...early season is resident dove hunting. ..mid to late season is when the dove from Iowa and Kansas start showing up. ....

and as to hunt them id be hunting them to help out the local farms considering doves crows and pigeons eat grain they carry diseases

Hahaha, I love that Paul had no idea what us Texans are talking about. Heck probably most of the US wouldn't know what we're talking about.

September 1st is like RELIGION in Texas. First day of dove season, and the day you have to have a new hunting / fishing license because they all expired on August 31st. Do you get the super combo? Do you just get the bird license? Well maybe it will rain and you will need that fishing license... If you were smart you got a new one 2 weeks ago, otherwise you are standing in line.

I didn't go opening day either. I couldn't line something up that had a more decent prospect than the backyard BBQ and pool party I was invited to.

I said, hey, 100 degrees, or a pool???

And seriously that's sacrilege that I would even consider not going. I think I'm going to head out this weekend to Llano and see what's flying out there.

Everything you just said is wrong. Well, besides that animals eat grain.

No one "gets food from the bottom of my truck", though after killing them you might place them there for a while, rather than on the dirt where ants would get in them and ruin a great, clean meat.

Additionally, the food at the store came from the wild at some point. Or likely, it came from worse than the wild. Ever seen a chicken farm? I'll eat farm raised chicken, but it's a serious ethical dilemma and not pretty. A lot worse than the back of *my* truck, anyway.

If you've never taken a life, removed the skin yourself, and then eaten it, it's a powerful and humbling experience. I would argue that everyone that eats meat should do it at least once.

A big part of it is the camaraderie of like minded good folks getting together to enjoy each others company and their shared interest. ......much like this forum. ....it appears this is a concept out of your grasp or ability......

I have to be real careful when I shake it off, shake it off, or my toes might get wet......

I used to run around camp gathering up all the dove guts.....heart, liver, and gizzard......because most people don't mess with them........

After cleaning the gizzard and removing the white part....I would finely dice all the inards....but keep them seperated...into a tablespoon of Canola oil....I would sautee the gizzards first.....then after a minute or so.....the heart dices.....another minute...the liver dices....a quick dousing of salt and a generous amount of coarse groung black pepper. ...and then a tablespoon of flour.....and a tablespoon of butter.....stir until the flour is just about to brown .....then dump in a cup of milk.......stir well. ...reduce heat and cook to desired consistency. .....spoon on top of buttered toast......

If you don't like that .....you probably don't like ice cream......

For the faint of heart. ....you can substitute finely chopped dove breast......

It really only takes one dove breast or the guts from 3 or 4 dove for this.....

Anyone who doesn't get this....probably hasn't spent $50 to $150 to bring home 15 little birds........

Well. .....that really depends on the hunter....the gun.....and the birds......and the set up........

7 1/2 is indeed the standard dove load......and it is a good all-around load to cover various conditions......

However....if you take a guy with an open choke....that is going to be shooting at close range passing dove....he may opt for 8 or even smaller. .....

Some hunt with full choke barrels and use up #6 shot high brass handloads......

For the guy in the middle.....it will depend on the birds sometimes. ....some days you have to look twice to make sure it's not the space shuttle. ...other days they come in low and fast like a fighter jet on a carrier deck......

So just as success is tied to the proper gun, load, set-up........and accuracy and discretion. ....so goes the amount of shot you must remove... .

If you hit a dove at 20 yrds... with a high brass #6 shot load and a full choke....there's not going to be a lot left to pick shot out of......

Normally. ...it's only 3-4 pellets that bring the dove down....and usually 1 or two that actually hit the part you are going to eat.......

On which loads to use:
Believe it or not, I have seen people waaaay outshoot me with a .410 shotgun. (I shoot a Remington 870 12 gauge wingmaster, kinda the Chevy work truck of shotguns) but they were shooting premium high brass.

But yeah for dove, 12 ga is generally 8 or 7 1/2 lead shot. I've never shot #6, or 4, but I think that would probably be too big for dove.

Doug, I have had dove hearts, but I haven't cooked the other offal parts. Chicken gizzards are just chewy but as dove are smaller, maybe it's different?

Maybe I'll give it a shot this year. Hearts are quite tasty, and but I think overlooked. Our grocery store carries beef hearts, those, skewered and grilled, are amazing.
