im not sure if im right or not, so dont hold me to my awnser, but i beleive that was for like maybe a snowblower, sort of like a built in jackshaft to change the gear ratio, for self propulltion

IIRC, second shaft is an extension of the camshaft. often used on snow blowers to drive the rear wheels. should work fine on a kart.

Im thinkin so too. Keep in mind that the two shafts will rotate in opposite directions.

You could use that with a belt tensioner, centrifugal clutch, or 2-piece CVT like a comet 40. The cover has no provision (or space, thanks to the camshaft) for a self contained CVT like a TAV2.

the small shaft DOES run backward, and at half crank speed. an alternator would be useless. i'm building a mini-trike(chopper) for my daughter, and found one in the dump. there doesn't look like enough clearance for a clutch. my plan was clutch/chain from crank to jackshaft for forward, and pulley/beltfrom aux. shaft to jackshaft for reverse. reverse would have higher reduction, and back the trike without any throttle. hold rev handle back to back up(tightens belt)then a spring returns it to "neutral" (slip). again, clearance for clutch? it's a 5hp briggs tiller motor.

Sounds like a possibility. IMO I would gear the reverse for approximately 1/3 of the speed of forward and use a belt tensioner powered by, say, a lever or additional pedal?

i guess i wasn't clear on that;reverse is a idle-speed only ,so the clutch doesn't engage forward. it backs only while handle(to tensioner) is held on. i have it drawn out on paper, but again,i don't believe the clutch will clear the cam pulley. the motor i'm using for mock-up has thrown a rod anyway.
