Don't think I'll be able to weld so...Anyone have any advice on this?

40 bucks for the first one seems like a good deal, good place to start with one anyway. another 20 bucks and you could have another frame to work on later.

id get the second one. the roll cage on the first is sketchy and has this fence piece over the front.

The first one is a production kart that has had a crappy roll cage welded on. I'm also from PGH, and just a warning, Homer City is about 1.5 hours away, so it's probably cheaper to get the first than the 2nd, just due to fuel prices.

yeah, make a new roll cage on the first one.... definately.. but i still like the 2nd, looks like a good old fashioned design.

is it vintage? $$?

My question about the 2nd one is, where do your legs go? I'm not a tall guy but I'm about 5'11 and not thin... It looks a bit small or awkward. I haven't seen it in person but it can't fathom how my legs would fit through that triangle and around them doesn't seem right either. Which is the correct way and what are the chances I'd fit? lol

Oh jeez. I just noticed that roll cage.
Ok, as is, the first one is a deathtrap with that cage. If it flips that thing could fold and trap you in.
That 2nd one is 70's or 80's yard kart I believe, as it doesn't look like there is any steering geometry in the front end. It may just be the angle of the pic though. It's weird that the rear end is raised like a race kart would be, but has straight front spindle anchors. If you have semi-flat open areas and aren't planning on much off-roading, this would be a decent frame for only $20.

I'd figure with a $100 HF clone included, you'll prolly spend $300 to get her going. I pulled all these prices out of my you-know-where and are rough guess-timates. Surely you could source some of these parts locally from hardware/farm stores and from online communities such as here. Heck, I got a bunch of this stuff I could sell ya.

motor 100
wheels 50
wheel hubs 25
tires 50
steering wheel 15
brake system 20 (drum)
pedals 15
tie rods, brake/throttle rods 20 (buy some steel rod and a die and cut and thread your own)
seat 30
sprocket hub and gears 30
a million little things that you will need ????

Your legs go around the hoop. You can extend the pedals and adjust seat placement for a proper fit. I'm 5'9" and fit in mine just fine which is similar to the second one.

The first one would be fine if you hacked off that cage. It's a mass produced kart as a base frame, that cage is some crappy work glued on with bubble gum.
