I had water in my oil when I was trying to start a old engine of mine. So I drained it, tillted the engine so it would drain even more. Cleaned the engine up. Had to get new gas line. And I put new oil in. Started right up. Smoked a little from the front, where I guess excess oil was. But the smoking has stoped but maybe just a tid bit. Unoticable if your not trying to see it. But this is where my problem starts.
Yesterday when I put the oil in, it was unreadable. Couldn't see the level of the oil. But from the past I think the engine holds 2 qts. So I just put in about 1qt and 1/4 of another quart. Even after letting the engine sit for acouple of hours. I still couldn't tell where the oil level was. It look like there was oil everywhere on the stick. However the engine ran fine besides the little smoke.
So today I started the engine, it ran fine. So after I did, I checked the oil. Only finding that it looked total opposite. There was oil no where to be found but only on the very tip of the stick. I checked it multiple times to make sure it was correct. So I went and put maybe another 1/4 of a quart back in it. I let it sit for about 20 minutes came back and checked it. Like before there was oil all of the stick, unreadable. But the think that scared me the most was there was white stuff on the stick also. It was bubbly. Have no clue what this could be. Look at the pictures. Please Help!!

If it was mine I'd drain the oil out again real good, tilt the engine on its side and pour in about a half gallon of mineral spirits, (available at hardware store) screw your filler cap back on, pick that engine up and really shake it all around while holing it upright, on both sides and upside down. Then let it soak for a 1/2 hour and repeat whole shaking process followed by draining and letting the engine sit for a couple days in a dry warm space with the drain/fill and spark plugs removed to help everything evaporate.

You should be able to stick a long screwdriver (or something) in the drain hole and scrape it around the engines floor to learn if you've washed everything out or not. If your still finding that white milky sludge, then repeat the whole process again as necessary until clean.

The whole inside of your engine is probably coated with a thick sludge/water mixture, flushing with mineral spirits should help emulsify it and wash it all away if you work at it hard enough.

And I'd find out for sure how much oil you engine is supposed to hold, dont just blindly trust that dip stick reading. What kinda engine is it?

This is a good trick, I've used a similar method in the past and it worked wonders. The white stuff you're seeing is emulsified water & oil. It is not a very good lubricant! You'll want to flush it out of there using anderkart's method before you run the machine again. One additional note I'd like to add is that you may want to turn the engine over a few times after filling the crankcase with mineral spirits (with the spark plug removed, of course). Tecumseh engines are typically pressure lubed, not splash lubed, so turning it over will pump a bit of mineral spirits through your oil pump and oil passages.

Yes it is pressure lubricated.

So you've got a spin-on oil filter? Leave it off for the above process, and only after everything is good, put a brand new one on.

There is no oil filter visible anywhere? Just a air filter and a gas filter. Is it inside the engine?
