Does sprocket location matter on the axle?

Is there any downside of putting the spocket on the outside of the two rear axle bearings next to the right wheel. I need a big sprocket to get the gearing down for a snowmobile engine and want to put it closer to the wheel in order to have more relative ground clearance.

Like landuse said, it doesn't matter. I have ran Sprockets at every possible place on an axle. Here is my current sprocket location.

One thing... Keep the support bearing closest to the sprocket as possible... wherever it is placed...
Out on the end of the axle limits the amount of wheel support, inside might not have structure of support to mount the bearing...

Definitely correct about getting the sprocket as close to a bearing as possible. Axle's are made to have a little flex in them. Pulling hard on a sprocket will be trying to flex the axle logarithmically with its distance from support.
