Came up with this wonderful little atrocity in about 20 minutes today at work. Stock muffler was shot, blowing exhaust back against the head. Actually caused the head gasket to fail from the heat. Replacement stock muffler is 80 bucks and special order, and didn't have time to wait for it to come in anyway. Picked up a new head gasket and exhaust gasket.
Grabbed a used oil filter off the drip rack (dual element for a 12 liter Cummins), cut it open, peeled the media out, flipped the lower baffle around backwards, stuffed everything back in (minus the filter media) put the end piece in backwards, hammered the lip over, and welded an inlet pipe into the bottom. The pipe is 1" EMT conduit, and the flange is a 1" grade 8 washer. It looked like someone cooked off a smoke grenade for about 5 minutes while the sludge was burning out of it, but it cleared right up and works great.
Cost nothing, and the real kicker is, it's WAY quieter than a new stock muffler would have been.
