Does anybody have any idea how to make a go-kart differential from scratch?
post pics, instructions, ideas, etc.

you have a machine shop? get a used diff off a quad or something.

Yeah I know I could get one from something else. It's just that I am very big into fabricating my own parts and wondered if anyone had come up with a way to make one or not, without serious machines.

*sigh* Ahh well I guess I'll have to come up with something.

Without serious equipment? Don't think so. I suppose you could go find some gears from something or other and fabricate your own carrier, but you're still not going to do it with a cordless drill and angle grinder. If you want one, they can be had from various parts suppliers and donor vehicles, but you probably don't want one. A well-set up live axle kart will kick the s**t outta one with a diff any day.

I put a diff from an old lawn tractor on the kart I built for my kids, and while it really does give it good pavement manners, it's crappy on low traction surfaces...

Agreed, a properly set up live axle is much better than a diff in almost every situation (the exception would be very low speed tight turns)

Oh I totally agree that a live axle is the best (I have one on my own kart). I just thought it would be cool to build my own diff.
