Hello again Gurus. It's been a while since I've posted but that doesn't mean I've stopped checking in and lurking...Today I need some info, advice and opinions from those who have built it.
I've been looking at the Dirt Devil builds here and have also gone to http://www.diyden.net/...I'm really digging the Dirt Devil, but no where can I find out how long or wide the "stock" Devil is. If I build it, it has to fit in the back of a half ton pickup. Also, most threads I've read, the builder has had to stretch and/or widen the cock pit in order for them to fit in it. Is this kart really that small? Primarily this will be built for the kids, but I'm going to want a turn too. At 6'-0" tall & 200lbs, am I going to fit? I have no problem buying the plans, but if the have to be majorly modified, then I'm probably better off spending the $30 on a light or steering wheel or whatever and designing from scratch.
If I build the Devil or facsimile, it will be primarily driven on gravel roads and grass. Some hills but nothing crazy. I'd like to have a balance between speed and torque.
I have 2 off shore, no name quads to harvest for parts and if I can use the engine and trans out of one of them, then I will have the reverse option that is very much desired. One is a 90cc and the other is a 110cc. Both are 3 gears forward and 1 reverse. Would either of these be considered a viable option for a power-plant? Perhaps with a jackshaft set up for getting an appropriate gear ratio?
I also can't find what size tubing this kart should built from or how many feet is needed. Basically, how heavy is this chassis in stock form? It's just my opinion, but some basic information like this should be listed by the seller so someone can plan accordingly. Can this be lifted by me into my truck or do I need ramps? If I use a different motor is it going to be powerful enough? etc. From pics I've seen, it looks like the tubing would be around 1 1/2" square. 1 1/2" x .125" tubing is around 2.25# per lineal foot. If this uses 80 feet of tube, the chassis alone will weigh around 180 pounds, plus the weight of the motor, wheels, driver and all the little things that add pounds...and that brings me back to, will my 90 or 110cc motor be powerful enough?
I'm just in the thinking stages right now, but I am building another kart to have ready for next summer. I like the look of the buggy type karts, which is why I was thinking of the Devil.
Thanks for reading and all that good stuff.
