Hi, Tpage and MikeM welcome to the forum! Wow! You guys are close to me! I'm just outside Tottenham! Closest to Bond Head, really.

I really have no idea where you can get UHMW polyethylene rods. Princess used to sell bags of offcuts, I'm not sure if they do anymore.

The chain tensioner (spring loaded) is your best bet. Getting the chain exactly the right size for the correct tension is a PITA, and it won't account for stretch, or even the slightest misalignment of sprocket centres. For a quick and easy automatic spring tensioner assembly, you may want to consider a serpentine belt tensioner from an automotive engine. Weld a tab to the frame and bolt the arm on- done.

Did you get the engine recently, when they had 'em on sale for $88? I was happy when I got mine for $100, then miffed when they put 'em on cheaper... Have you been to the new Barrie store lately? Nice!

Your frame's looking pretty good, guys!

Thanks. I've only gone to the Newmarket Princess location. They don't have uhmw at all. There's a surplus shop in Kitchener though that has lots of uhmw cutoffs. I might drop in there on Monday when I visit my folks.
We got the Honda clone from princess for $99 on sale back in November. Can't complain.

Posted a few more pictures of the build in my album here:
http://www.diygokarts.com/vb/album.php?albumid=206

On Friday I had a chance to work on the front end. I finished the suspension by making some bushings out of UHMW plastic and bolting on the wheels and shocks.
The tie rods that were supplied in the kit I bought from BMI was for one of their kart frames so they're a bit short for our frame. I just bolted them to a temporary piece of steel to the wheels wouldn't flop around. I'll have to fix that by either making a tie rod extension or just new ones.

The rear swing arm is done as well, no pictures of it yet though. I decided to just weld the bearing retainers to the bearing mounting brackets I bought from BMI on sale to the read swingarm tube. That worked out very well.
I just need to make the upper mounting brackets for the rear shock to the frame and them drill out the swingarm pivot brackets for a long bolt. After that we should be ready to mount the engine and finally the chain, brake and other items.

Once the kart is up on all it's wheels the other stuff should come along quickly.

Making progress guys!
The kart is up on the wheels now. Just have to finish the steering linkage and wheel and the chain/brake. I already installed the seat but didn't take any pictures of that yet.
Once we have that completed we should be able to take it for a quick spin and make any mods before we prime and paint.
What a blast to build!!

I really love this go-kart but frankly some of the welds posted above ,kind of scare and I would not trust them..I would rather be safe then sorry and see some one get hurt because of it..

Those do kind of look like they're just sitting on top of the metal...almost like you welded it with MIG wire but no shielding gas.

Flux core wire is what we used since we don't have the more expensive gas shielding stuff. Would much rather have gas but for this project it's good enough. Some may look like crap but trust me, they are very strong. Besides, we're not going to the moon here ;)
