Finally starting my dirt devil build picked up my four wheeler today and now i have to get it running so it may be a while until i get the kart finished. Its a 1985 Suzuki LT125 Quad Runner I'm pulling the engine(5-speed semi-auto with reverse), axle, hubs, spindles, and chopping up the frame to built the dirt devil along with buying some square steel, shocks, and steering components...the brakes on this ATV are phenomenal so those will likely stay the same along with the drive setup I may do something with the exhaust it i don't like the sound though...Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated.

So far I've cleaned out the carburetor and checked for spark but due to a late start and late night last night i decided to come in and share this experience with everyone the thing just won't start so tomorrow im going out getting some starting fluid, gas and oil to get this thing at least closer to running and i may tear apart the gas tank area because i can't really see the fuel pump and other components.Anyone thing they can help me figure out the starting issue?

is that a 2 stroke or 4 stroke engine? The reason i ask is that if its 2 stroke then don't mess with the exhaust it has to have a certain amount of back pressure in order to function properly but if its 4 stroke then it dosnt matter what you do with it!

not necesarilly true but if you cleaned the carb and it still wont start i'd be doing a compression test to see if thats the problem

i believe it does make a difference in performance when you keep the factory exhaust on... i know from experience because on my cousin tried to make a new exhaust for his two stroke and it did sound better but a huge cut in performance

Hey everyone its a 4-stroke you can tell because the spark plug is located below the top of the head, two-strokes have a plug pretty much always at the very top of the cylinder sticking straight up...
I'll probably be making a completely new exhaust but I have to get it running first though and today I learned one of the valve cover caps was JB WELDED ON! so I have to buy a new valve cover because I have to check the valve lash and I can't get the cap back on

yeah it wont even come close..well actually the closest its gotten to starting is when it flamed out the intake and lit my crankcase on fire because some gas dripped down..haha

the exhaust looks nothing like a 2 stroke exhaust... so thats a big clue. the pics are blurry but its easy, just look for the oil drain plug!

Not all two-strokes have an expansion chamber like the Yamaha pw-50 bikes ...they look like they're four-strokes but are two strokes it really depends on the manufacturer and bike but your right for most of the time...and also two-strokes with a transmission always have a drain plug and all motocross/dirt bikes have one two-stroke or four but if its like a weed whacker engine of course it won't have a drain and I'm assuming that's what your referring to haha

I was going to suggest that.. To keep stuff clean, I can
a) lock this thread
b) delete it
c) add it to your project build thread

Your call.
