Without more detail, the list is endless, it could be a dirty carb, torque converter belt, bad gearing or anything in between.
What kind of kart is it?
What is the drivetrain?
when did the problem first occur?
What exactly is it doing?

I agree with Fab. Do you have a TC or centrifugal clutch? What are the sprocket tooth counts? etc

If it has a TC, you will see 2 things that look like pulleys. One attached to the engine, and the other to a jackshaft. They are connected by a belt. The jackshaft will have a small sprocket with a chain going to the axle sprocket which is bigger. Give us those tooth counts.

If you have a centrifugal clutch, the engine will have a bell looking contraption on it with a sprocket. A chain will go from this to the axle.

Here are some pics of cent clutches and TC's. The first is a cent clutch

If you have a stock Manco 285, then you should have a TC according to the OWNERS MANUAL

Was just out looking at this again it's doing my head in . There seems to be to much play in the belt can this be adjusted.

There's supposed to be a lot of play in the belt. Head over to the Engines And Clutches section, and check out a thread entitled, "Maintaining Your Torque Converter".

Like Toy says, there is supposed to be lots of slack. You can easily fix up your TC by following the maintenance suggested in the sticky Toystory mentioned. It is not too hard
