Digital tach cheap!

You guys know you can buy used Digatron racing tachs for like $50-75 right? They usually tell CHT's too if you want to watch those.

USED "no sensors or wires.guy i got it from says his buddy told him it worked great, unless the engine is running then it acts funny sometimes. sold as is no returns............"

gixxer, the magnet would be inside the edge of the flywheel so it wouldn't come off unless the flywheel turned inside out(yikes). changed my my mind about that idea anyway.
could be used on any engine/ rotating thing you can safely mount a magnet and sensor on.

if you wanted to use a rc prop type tach get a non contact laser tach. they are cheap and just read a shiny piece of tape on a spinning part of your motor, no prop to worry about. i want to mount mine in a small dash board.

i redid the tach sensor setup last night. i took the lock collar off the pto shaft that was keeping my clutch where it needed to be. then i used a grinder and carefully cut basically keyways opposite each other on the outside of it. i was looking for some thing to sit it on while the jb weld set up and found that the inner snap on part of a spray paint can fit the lock collar perfectly. i cut it out and jb'ed them in the keyways. then i slid the cap part over it being careful not to get any in the set screw threads. i dont think i'll have any issues with balance or the magnets coming off now. i'm gonna throw it on the lathe and clean it up when its dry. i built a aluminum holder for the sensor but dont have pics of it right now. by the way jb weld is actually steel. it gets attracted to the magnets and piles up on it, pretty cool!if you need any more info on this check out my kart build thread. any updates will be there.its running now.

I dig the ingenuity, I too like to build things myself. but a "works connection" or "trail tech" hour/tach for a dirt bike. is self powered and all you have to do is wrap a wire around your sparkplug wire to install. it gives realtime tach, and a highest rpm when the motor is shut off. plus i keeps you up to date on how many hours your engine has ran, great for maintenance intervals. they retail for 33 dollars on motorcycle web sites and there are several off brands on ebay for less. If you're into electronics tinkering look into Arduino lots of cool stuff.

those look like a pretty good deal, better than the phony tiny tachs. but it still is a lcd screen(small and unlit) and hard to read, impossible at night. i almost have all the bugs worked out on mine,jumps around a little but i think it is because i'm using two pulses per revolution and they are not exactly 180 degrees from each other. gonna remove one magnet and change the setting to one pulse per revolution. plus i'm only in it for about half that $.

yeah it wouldn't work at night. but i don't have lights on it...Yet. Awesome you got yours working. my long term plans include telemetry using an arduino. accelerometer, temp. speed. and whatnot. if i can figure out the coding. hardwear should be easy. already have the sensors.
