Hey folks,

I'm very new to the go-kart world. I have dealt with Predator motors and built some clones for mini bikes but I would like to do something different with my first go-kart build. A diesel motor would be awesome. I found some options online but the diesel equivalent industrial grade engines seem pretty pricey. Any ideas on where to go for a reasonably priced diesel motor for my offroad kart?

I found that on ebay but its out of my budget. I could always just buy and build a clone for less than 200 out of spare parts but that's too easy!

Those are cool motors.... However those aren't aloud to be sold now in Canada due to emission control laws . Princess auto sold them a couple of years ago... however now recalled them citing the same....

Princess sell a 208 clone on typically sale for $130.... Just missed the sale.....

haha I scooped up a 208 last week on sale. They're tried and true motors and dirt cheap. Never knew princess sold these! Oh well, maybe a dirt bike engine would be unique enough and cool

Diesel motors are expensive. Check starpuss on youtube, he ended up with like 20 of them and put them on different projects (gokarts, tractors etc)

Drove a John Deere Gator as a service vehicle for a time. It was the TH 6x4 model. Delightful little 3 cylinder Diesel engine but it was water cooled.

It would be interesting to have a Diesel conversion kit available for our small engines.

I ve seen the small air cooled diesel motors on mini bikes but it is a rare sight. I'm pretty sure they can run a similar clutch to what you d have on a 6.5Horse. I see sometimes little Kubota motors but air cooled is a must for simplicity in my kart. I ll have to check that guy on youtube out. But your right diesels are super pricey

The diesel Yanmar clone Carroll Stream sells, runs at 3600 RPM as do most air cooled diesels do from What and Kohler. However, I wouldn't trust a Chinese Yanmar, I'd rather locate and spend the money on a true L100N from Yanmar.

Hatz was the first company if I remember that came out with a high speed air cooled diesel. Deutz (pronounced Doitz) ran air/fan cooled diesels in tractors for a number of years up until recent years (think 09), but those were in farm tractors and a few stationary equipment.

A TC engages around 1600rpm, where the Chinese Yanmar would have max torque, then after that the torque drops at around 2500rpm.

A designer knows he has achieved perfection, not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.

That would be awesome in an off grid environment.
As long as it's clean, you can run a diesel on almost any oil. Vegetable, olive, motor, whathave you.

Holy carp though, 105 pounds???

I thought that was interesting too. When I had the PowerLand420 the short time I had it it was heavy but not 105pounds heavy.
(albeit, i was working out for strength at that time.) Unless this has more stuff on it?

Also check out the power output..
10hp@ 3600rpm
8.6hp@3000rpm
.. I guess its' powerband is around/between the 3 and 4000's. Thing is, the chart doesn't show the Torque outputs. Seems like a good amount to be able to jump 1.4hp in 600rpm for this size engine.
I wonder how much power the governor is holding back.

Anyways, while the topic is here>>> Is it possible to just buy a 420cc and convert to diesel and save a ton of money as if it was car insurance :D ?ba-dm tss. Ok, i'll see myself to the door lol.

Not sure about the switch over. A diesel engine takes a lot of compression to fire.
One possibility is this:
I have a 1940's international bull dozer. The engine runs on both gasoline and diesel.
The engine starts on gas, and you let it warm up a bit. Then you move a lever that shuts off the gas and introduces diesel.

Don't be mistaken. This isn't a pony motor setup.

Give it a go FR!

It would be awesome to have a diesel but IMO i guess its just too expensive. But yeah imagine a biodiesel hippie offroad kart!

It's not that bad price wise. It's about on par on how much a GX270 9hp with electric start would run brand new. Just can't mod a diesel easily. But it'll use 40-50% less fuel than a gas engine of similar size. Plus the engine was designed to be a replacement for engines in the 16-18hp rating. So you'll save money running Off road diesel (wouldn't waste time making biodiesel, too much involved and may cut engine life shorter) vs running premium non-oxygenated gasoline.

A designer knows he has achieved perfection, not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.
