Detroit Diesel Starter into winch

Do you guys think the starter from an 8v92 Detroit diesel engine could be converted into a winch for a go kart. I got the starter for free so if wouldn't cost to much, and I probably have most of the stuff I need to build it laying around. Plus I like building my own stuff rather than buying it. Thanks for any input.

Starters draw a ton of amps, more than a winch. They are also geared differently. It could be done, but may not be worth it due to the battery issue.

Can work, just need gear reduction so it's not too fast. But why use something from a Screaming Jimmy? Most winches under full load use about 125amps, this starter probably uses 700+ amps.

We have the whole truck at our place so that why I though of using that.

Just get a steep worm gear reduction, compact and high ratio!

Still doesnt address the amperage issue. Youll need some major battery and charging power to run it for any length of time.

Do you think the alternator from that engine would be enough of a charging system.

I've never looked into the alternator output of a DD, but I'd imagine it's not much more than 250 amps probably at 2200 RPM.
