Determinating axle length

Just want to know how to order an axle with hubs. When the hubs are mounted to the axle are the hubs wheel mounting surface close to the advertised axle length? I'm a bit confused on which axle type to choose, solid, threaded or threaded shoulder? Planning to start building the chassis while I wait for the parts to come in.

Are you building it for on or off road use post pics of the hubs you are trying to use.mine is a 40 inch axle with the 3/4
Inch stepdown is like 2 inches long then the hubs I'm using I only got 32 inches between my hubs but mines for off road use

Every axle you order is supposed to be measured at where the wheels are measured at the mounting flange.

So set 2 wheels where you want them and measure the inside mounting flange to inside mounting flange and that's the width axle you need.
