Yes, but was that truly necessary? IMO, an invention driven by necessity is something like the wheel, grinding stones(for flour & such), and farm equipment. The last two were necessary because farms had to keep up with a rising population.

TV is hugely important! It's a means of communicating major information, above anything else. How else would the majority of us know about the disaster in Japan happening at the moment?

TV, internet, radio, etc, all play huge rolls. We just take them for granted.

It's all necessity in some form or another, and some cave man did invent a way to make fire because he needed it.

I'll give that it's not 100% but about 99.5%

How much different would you life be had you not known of the situation in Japan? Most likely, it hasn't been influenced at all. Is that your acquired mental nesceesity to know, or your basic necessity to live?
