The other day, the daughter was watching 'some' show, where there was a swing in the little girls room, so she came n asked me if I could make her one?
Knowing she would possibly be weighing it down w/ either herself and/or her stuff... I wanted to ensure it could/would withstand anything she did, without tearing the ceiling down.
I went to HDepot, and bought a bowed 2x6x10 treated(bowed on purpose), a 1/2"x12" eye bolt...
...along w/ 3 washers(largest OD that fit properly on the bolt) and 2 extra nuts.
I came home and cut the 2x6x10 in half, then took one of the halves and cut 2ft off it. I went in her room and poked a straightened hanger, up into the ceiling, where she wanted the swing(single rope swing). I crawled up into the attic w/ the 3 2x6's, the nuts/washes, 6 18penny nails, an old valve spring, a hammer, a hand saw and cordless drill w/ a 3/4" bit(leaving the eye bolt in the room.
I located the hanger, and it happened to stick up next to a truss(triangular wood frames in attic that form the roof) by 3inches. I slide over the insulation, then took the 2ft 2x6...marked on it w/ a nail, the exact distance between the 2 trusses where the hanger stuck out, and cut. I then measured the distance from the truss to the hanger and marked that distance on the 2x6 and drilled a hole. I slid 'that' 2x6 between the trusses lining the hanger up w/ the hole, and nailed a nail on each opposing side of the truss, where the 2x6 lay, to prevent it from sliding between the trusses. I then centered the 5' and 3' 2x6's stacked, and drilled a hole in the middle through both. I laid the 2x6's across 3 trusses and lined up the hole w/ the hanger. It made contact w/ the outer 2 trusses, but had a gap of 1/4" from the middle(remember bowed on purpose). I then removed the 2 boards and hanger, and continued the hole in the 2x6, down through the ceiling below... restacked and nailed the ends. The eye bolt was then fed up though the ceiling/boards where I stacked in this order the items, from the board up, 2 washers, valve spring, 2 washers then all 3 nuts tightened.
The eye sticks out the ceiling alone w/ no weight on it. W/ my daughter on the swing it hangs down bout 3/4" further. Im not at all sure how much itll hold... but I had myself/wife/daughter all on it bouncing(400+lbs) and the ceiling did acouple pop sounds, but no damage or any other sounds afterwards.
