if its a full size buggy, rack and pinion would be nice, kart size steering racks can be had cheap too.

Car control learned well in advance of actually driving a car on the streets is a huge bonus that parents should respect. I'm a parent and I'm already teaching my children about car control at ages 4 and 6... Getting the urge to powerslide and do other crazy stuff out of your system on a kart is much better than on the public roads!

My 2 cents...

Problem there is about the first time they get in snow with the $1000 FWD econobox you will probably buy them they will learn that FWD handles *** backwards compared to RWD. I did learn a lot playing with karts/mowers, and I think you are doing a good thing. But nothing can prepare them for off throttle oversteer and their intuition that less throttle=less slide is wrong.

All i gotta say is if you are unsure about anything ANYTHING that may put your safty in danger... stop what you are doing take a breath try to figure it out and if you cant come ask someone more expriranced... i cant spell... but there is NO STUPID QUESTION when it comes to safty

FWD vs RWD vs AWD - most of the same principles apply - braking, over/under steer, looking down the road, anticipation, etc... I've raced both karts and FWD cars for 20+ years and found that going fast and staying on the track is 99% the same. Inducing and balancing over/under steer is different for sure but I guarantee the lessons I learned karting as a kid helped a lot when cutting my teeth on icy northern Michigan roads with FWD (and AWD) cars as a teen.
