I was just thinking about that too. You might want to put a 45 bend in the exhaust to point down and outside a bit more.
Funny you ask. It's pointed up and out. Just got back from store with 1/2" 90 to point it straight out the side....right now it isn't bad. Noise is worse then anything..probably look into a small super trapp ffrom jackssmallengine.com

These are used on 200cc/4 cycle racekarts in Canada where they're tracks have strict noise-level rules.
Cool thanks . I just took a piece of 1/2" copper pipe , extended the exhaust 4" then turned it 90 degrees out and went another 4"...it suprised me a lot but it cut down exhaust noise by AT LEAST HALF!! Wow. Crazy. Now no exhaust / loud thump are directed in her
