Kinda depends on the size and weight of your kart. I think I'd lean towards a 4 stroke engine of at least 450~500ccs, 2 strokes make a LOT more power per pound, but tend to be a bit more finicky, don't make good bottom end torque, and don't really have a smooth power/torque curve at all.
You can't really go wrong with any of the big 4, (Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, or Yamaha). I think my personal favorite would be Honda, I ride a 93 CBR 600F2 every day, it's as reliable as they come, and runs 11.30s @120 mph in the 1/4 mile, 7.20s @100 in the 1/8.

wow. that sounds pretty good. I think i would take a yamaha over any others though. Do you think i would have to much power with lets say a 1100cc GSXR engine?

Don't know if it's just the way you worded it, but you know that GSXR's are Suzuki, right?

And yes, too much power, and would cost too much. Would use more tyres than fuel, but still use a HELL of a lot of fuel. :roflol:

You might wanna see what you can come up with for a motor, and kinda build the kart around it, ;) If you stuck to your original plan, big heavy kart, towing a trailer, etc., run some big tires and the right gearing, a GSXR 1100 would do fine.
If you're in the USA, Craigslist is a pretty good source for used/wrecked bikes, and you can advertise that you are looking for one, that's how I found my RM 250. I'd been scouring Ebay and Craigslist for months trying to find a bike in the price range I was looking for, no such luck. So I ran my own ad looking for a 125 to 250 cc 2 stroke bike motor, and found 2 RM 250s motors in 3 days, both right in my price range (about $250). Mine came with CDI box, coil, carb, radiators and some hoses, all I needed was a pipe, bought an expansion chamber and silencer off Ebay for $29, shipped.

well ya i know its suzuki lol but i know i would use up tires like water. so for this im guessing a 5-6 speed 4 stroke being atleast a 500 would do great? im kind of dumping the idea about hauling **** but ya. i just wanna go off-roading with it. i got some pretty dam big swamp quad tires :roflol: and maybe in time i will put a 4WD converter on it :roflol: lmao
but i still didnt get an answer about what that thing is called in the back that has an axle on each side driving each wheel even when the tires are in two different positions and allowing ind. suspension in the back be possible. What is that thing called? that is what i would want :drool5:
and ya i use craigslist, i have an account and i sold a 43ccGT turbo motor scooter for about $275 on there. it was just one you sit on and zoom around. i cant complain because i walked into a broken down abandened house and found that brand new. alls it needed was a new key ignition because i couldnt find the key and a pull starter(not that i needed it)
but ill keep searching for an engine or scrap bike :]
oh btw if you guys can do me a favor and tell me if you see a sweet deal under $150 involving a motor thats atleast a 400?
-thanks :cheers2:

ok i have found a 1979 Honda cb750 motorcycle. i will trade a guy my 8mm mauser sporter rifle for it. it is complete, runs great, and comes with title. only downfall, tires are shot, and it needs a new chain. tires dont matter to me but the chain wont be hard to fix. does this sound like a good trade? is it a good motor to use for a go-kart?

IMHO, it's kinda old, heavy, and not very powerful compared to more modern bike motors. What's your rifle worth?

idk im not totaly sure. maybe about $350 but not positive. i can also do some things to the motor if i want. Carb. rebuild kit, bigger jets, port out the carb., bore out the blocks(i go to a vocational school were we have machine shop. i can get it bored out and pistons made free for me, alls i have to do is buy rings an stuff) but ya. what else would i be able to do to it to jump up power? besides a torque converter and something that has to do with gearing.

No matter what you do, you're not going to be able to shave that much weight, or add enough power to be anywhere near comparable to even a modern 600cc water cooled motor. ;)
The motor is probably worth the price for a guy that's restoring an old 750, but probably not the best choice for you, unless you just like the old resto type stuff.

Not a very suitable motor for a gokart, but it will still go like stink. No need to do it up so much, it would have more than enough power. HOWEVER, it is very heavy as others have pointed out.

A 250 has a crazy amount of power for a gokart. I think that even such an old 750 would have more than enough power, but the weight....
