So I welded a frame from scratch without any parts or real designs in mind, I was bored and have alot of 1/2 inch pipe lying around.

Started buying parts, most of which I have, as of this thread I am still waiting on a larger rear axle, and some bearings.

I changed the frame to incorporate a swing arm suspension in the back, 3-5 inch hardened bolts will pivot between the pipe and ride on pvc soft tubing. Not the perfect answer but I have lots and it can be replaced.

So here are some pics of the frame so far, once i get the axle and bearings I can start planning it out more. And with that more pics.

Not much to show so far but thoughts would be appreciated.

Good start , you`ll get more support on your swingarm if you have another piece of pipe welded on the frame on each side of your bolts that hold the swingarm to the frame .

I'm not sure I follow, weld the swingarm and frame together? Kinda defeats the purpose, but you must be talking about something else. Or are you talking about doubling up on the frame pieces?

Stuff has 1/8 inch walls, its pretty tough stuff. I stood on the frame and swingwarm in just about every possible angle and the stuff doesnt budge. I am going to beef up the frame with cross supports throughout after I am certain everything is going to go where it goes.

your not understanding what i meant , heres a quick photo so you understand ,

you need to sandwich the swingarm support between 2 frame supports , otherwise your bolt will not be supported on one end ,

You mean a full length axle for the swingwarm? That pic is really hard to see whats going on in the middle.

In other news I got the new axle today. Going to get building on the rear end now.

I think i see it now. 2 joints on the frame side? Sandwiching the joint on the swingarm side.

Those are some good looking welds! what kind of welder do you have? i would guess MIG but dont know.

just from looking at the welds, i'm going to say mig or flux core welds, made with a lincoln welder.

of course instead of looking at the welds you could look at the lincoln mig welder in the background,

It may be FC. I don't see a bottle of gas. Actually, I want to see more photos of that garage. It looks like it's got a lot of tools and fun little things. Like those organizer bins of who knows what!

FCAW Lincoln SP-175 plus, that welder is a champ. Does everything from big to small.

This is my neighbors shop seeing as how I do not have one of my own anymore. He has all the toys and tools.

Those are the longest bolts I could find in his place that fit snugly in the 1/2 inch pipe. And I really dont want to torch those welds out. I will if I have too though.

Anybody else want to weigh in on the swing arm joints? I see deranges point but I think they are pretty strong joints, and there are three of them. I could fit some smaller tabs on there and run a piece of all thread bar through it. All thread isn't that strong though.

I would look at making them double shear instead of your single shear design. Not all that hard, even if you where just to make a small tab. I think the minimal amount of work is worth it.

But then, it is your project, do what you want.

I also found these 2 little gems in the neighboring business's dumpster......they are a little nasty, and kind of smell, but they are free from defects like rips and whatnot.

I could make a smaller tab for the left side frame. But the bolts wouldnt fit, id have to use a one piece bar. I gotta think about this, no work is getting done tonight though, heater is making the most god awful racket and must be silenced.

I'm on board with the double-shear pivots, too. And don't use allthread. Not only is it ungraded crap, the threads will masticate your bushings in no time flat. Watch your weight, too- pipe can get heavy, and while the seats are neat, they're not featherweights, either. What are you powering with?

gx140, the total frame as it sits now is like maybe 50 pounds. i can pick it up with one hand. Come 2 weeks I am buying a 6.5 clone at HF for 109 bucks when they go on sale. It will go on there then. But If I dont have this thing ready, I may just be using that to start with.

I dont want to use all thread it is junk. but i also dont want to spend any more money on this thing. With parts that I have bought and dont work, total cost is around 500-550. Thats with a free motor.

Round stock would work, and I can make it work, I just dont have any on hand that would fit nice and tight in the pipe with my home made bushings.

You don't have to spend money to put the pivots in double shear, you have to spend time. Cut the pivots off the frame, cut them in half, and reweld the halves on either side of the swingarm pivot. Same bolts can be used, just extra labour.
