I've already got parts shipped in, r chez, and I know a guy with a lathe. I appreciate the offer.

Also it just occurred to me that since this isn't my thread you may not be talking to me... so I should stop now before I hijack it. I have to return some video tapes anyway.

Hey guys
Just wanted to let you know that I will be adding an extension on my crankshaft in a couple of weeks. I will let you know how it goes if I get it done before you. If not, I'll keep taking notes.
Good luck!

PS: When welding the extension, my friend suggested soaking asbestos cloth in water and wrapping the crankshaft to keep the oil seal from marring. The cloth would absorb heat fast, but not fast enough to warp. Hope this helps

Hey guys!

I just wanted to let you know that I got the extension on the crankshaft, and it works great! Here was the process: my friend bored a 5/16" hole out of the middle of a 1" (maybe 1-1/4"?) length of 3/4" jackshaft. The extension is not threaded because lining up threads with the original would be very difficult. He then tig welded it into place, keeping the keyway aligned and the butting surfaces flush. To keep the crank seal from being damaged, he wrapped the crank with water soaked asbestos cloth. Filing down the weld was the final touch on this modification. Previously, my driver pulley had about 1/8" contact with the crank because of all the spacers, plates, alignment etc. Now it has near complete contact. I don't expect the extension to handle extreme loads, but the pulley still contacts the original shaft enough for me not to worry. Here are some pics:

Hope this helps!

Wow, your friend did a really neat job.

I'll transfer the compliment!

He did use a lathe both to bore the 5/16" hole and to flush the edge which would contact the crankshaft end. He suggested welding with tig for control, but I'm sure mig would work fine. I don't know about arc; I think that would be pretty hard/ messy.
