I need some help, i'm trying to make a cr500 shifter kart, i have the chassis and the motor already but the way the exhaust bends on the 89-01 motors comes really close, to almost touching the seat, i dont know what i should do with the exhaust bend, the options are pay a shop to make a custom expansion chamber, get one for a earlier motor but then it wont be tuned exactly right, or get a different motor, possibly a 4 stroke dirt bike, any in put would be appreciated, thanks

cut and weld the existing pipe? as long as the internal dimensions and length remain the same it don't matter which way it curves. Some guy told me about how he had a similar problem back in the '80s where the pipe was like touching his arm. So he wrapped his arm with asbestos haha. Don't do that.

cr500 kart would be awesome

Welding on old pipes can be tricky. Learn how to do it right. I seen lots of craked welded pipes.

Can you put a heat shield on the back of the seat?

i considered re routing the original exhaust with cutting and welding, but the pipe is so thin the welder i have will burn through it in a heart beat, i thought about a heat shield but the exhaust litteraly touches the seat from where its at now, so i could move the seat more but it would affect frame geometry, and with the way a 500 exhaust bends, there is no way to rotate it any way other than the way it is. i think im going to try and find a cheap earlier cr500 exhaust, the bend is different right off the cylinder so it will give me some room to mess with so hopefully i can make that work

i could but then the expansion chamber wouldnt work as designed, they are a paticular length and the lenght starts at the exhaust port in the cylinder

It may matter some. But I am willing to bet you would not notice. This is what I did. I did not want to wld on the pipe. SO I modified the manifold. Put a heat sheild on your seat back. And wrape the pipe in header wrape. You will be fine.
