I am not realy sure about them but my guess is get the gearing rite and get one rated for mor hp than you are using might do the trick, How big are the tyres?
And what sort of axle is on the atv? Has it go a diff?

tires are AT22x11-8 and it has a stright axle

Would love to find a 12+hp used if i could find one that has been taken care of and for a cheap price instead of the 6.5clone

Yeah mabey you can get somthing like a tiller that he been broken and has a good motor? How powerfull is your verticle shaft engine ?
I was just thinking if you could get a diff out of the smallest car you can find you could mount it with the uni joint pointing up and run a chain drive strait to it!

My grandpa used to have a Tote Gote he used for hunting. It was really slow, I remember running alongside it as a little kid (10 mph maybe?), but because of the low gearing (around 40:1, I believe) it had TONS of torque. My grandpa used to haul moose out of the bush with it. The design is fairly simple and would be easy to copy. There's also tons of info on the web about Tote Gotes, they have a bit of a cult following and most owners are very helpful and talkative people. The bike in the photo is just an example but that's basically what the bike looked like, and it shows the jackshaft arrangement really well.

You might also have some luck with a rototiller transmission. I built a kart in high school with a tiller trans that ended up being ridiculously slow and therefore not really all that fun, but it could climb almost anything. I don't remember the model of tiller it came from, but it had 1 forward speed, neutral and reverse, which might come in handy if you're planning on pulling stuff :D

This may be an option as well. That guy is pretty big.

ever think about walking the fence lines? its excersize, quiet, relaxing, time to contemplate things.

leave the wheeler as-is, grab any motor you can get free or cheap, rig up a jack shaft for serious gear reduction, and crawl all over the place.

I walk them now when it is to wet to drive my truck. Just gets a little heavy carrying everything to repair as you go. If it can do a max of 15-20 mph i would be happy. I am just not sure the math on the gears and if it is possable with a 6.5. I know 15-20 is not crawling but with 640 acres to tend not counting the stuff i lease for hay. slow is not always ok.

10:1 with your 22" tires will be perfect. You will most likely have to use a jackshaft setup to get the sprockets down to a reasonable size, unless you can find a 100+ tooth sprocket. However, when your sprocket is that large, it also hangs down closer to the ground and is more likely to get bashed by a rock or root or whatever. That's why a jackshaft would be perfect :D Keep us posted, take lots of pictures!

I am going to try and use the current sprocket I think it is a 48 but don't quote me. when I get home I'll count it out and see what I need to get for the jack

I am gonna have to say go with a TC over a clutch. If you have the money you will definitely want to get a TC my brother is 300+ and he rides my go kart which only has a 5hp briggs and stratton engine. We have a comet 30 series TC which carries him at around 20mph and climbs hills quite easily. This is of course all just my opinion but if you have the money you wont regret the TC

what is the major advantages of a tc? If i understand right it correct if i went with a tc if i have a 10:1 setup with a jack
if i go with a tc it would be?
on the low end it would be 27:1 and high end 10:1
so if i understand right 2.7 for the low and 1:1 high
so i could go with 15:1 low and 5.5 high
or am i just thinking all wrong?

Your right, torque converters allow you to get the best of both worlds. Tons of torque and a good top speed.
