There is an 18 hp air cooled engine for sale outside someones house near mine. Me and a friend had the idea to build a go kart and I was wondering would this engine pack enough speed and power? Would I have to get / make a simple transmission to get good speed from this?

note (ya it may not work but hey summer project lol!)

Don't know much about the engine aside from hp looks like it could be 2-stroke

Is it vert or horizontal? if its vert it would be a pain and you would need to buy a RAGB. If its Horizontal and reasonably priced grab it, an 18hp engine would make any kart fly.

should be great! if u get it to work out, alot of peolpe use around 6hp, so if u have 18hp YOUR SET, but gear it for what u want, power or speed, i normaly just go with something in between, u can always change it later if its not wat u want, bigger the sproket more power, smaller the more speed

ya i was looking around and i am having trouble finding a budget clutch for an 18 hp they are all 13 hp. The idea was to have it mid-ranged for off roading but still have some nice speed!

The clutch will still work fine, just take it easy on the gearing and throttle, and it'll work beautifully.

some if not all the parts are over built. for example the tav2's say 8hp, but a few people are running upwards of 15hp.

You could make a belt tensioner clutch. CVT's are pricey, comet 40 series which would be the model you need for a 18 twin would be around $250 new. A centrifugal clutch for a 18 twin would run you $80-$100, and would suck.

If you scrounge around on ebay you might be able to find a cvt clutch for 1" cheap.
I got mine for 30 with shipping .Then I had to buy the driven, (30) and still need a belt, (30)

But I had to look HARD for this clutch, Its an old comet\salisbury clutch off of a golf cart.

Cheaper solution would be to run a chain to a jackshaft, then Run a Cheaper CVT clutch system from the jackshaft.
That way you could run like a 3\4" drive clutch, which are wayy cheaper than 1"
1" for some reason is rare, and expensive.

Thanks for that information! Another thing though I had a thought the gif near the end of the webpage i linked above showing a type of cvt could that same design concept be used but as a manual. Yes I know it takes away the point of a cvt but still it is an option?
