construct simple muffler

this involes too engines that need mufflers first my kart and our 1kva generator

first the generator
it is a chinese 1kva copy of one the honda ones exept it is as noizy as all F*** so although it is a rarely asked question how can i make it quiter

second the kart
i could just bolt a car muffler on but that would look bad
also i want to use it to chase sheep on the farm as the four wheeler we use is an automatic and u cant get within 100m of them and the ute is too slow
but i also want it to be quite loud as the noise adds to the fun (and is safer in dunes) so can i put a valve in the exust to change the volume

Back in the "old days" we used exhaust "cutouts" on car exhaust.

That is just the electric butterfly valve, you mount one of these

as close as possible to the engine, that is the cutout, normally you would have to remove/install the blocking plate whenever you want loud or quiet exhaust, for ~$130 you can make it happen at the flick of a switch.

An alternative is a cable operated cutout, like this one. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MRG-5424/ they dont work very good.

The mufflers that a lot of us built are usually from found materials and cost nothing but a little time. Have a look around here, I and a few others have posted threads on this. Look at my avatar to see mine...

Not much to it. You attach a muffler to one side of the cutout. The other side remains "open". For street use, the exhaust runs thru the muffler. For racing, you open the cutout, effectively straight-piped. Russ' link shows not the cutout, but an electric valve you can use to "open" the pipe.

Apparently, Supertrapp makes some pretty small units. I'd love one of those. You add/remove baffles to alter the sound.

The supertrapp mufflers are absolutely terrible from what I've read. Not well put together, very restrictive, and don't muffle the sound much at all.

Well, then either they've changed over the years, or maybe just the small engine versions suck. I remember back when I was a teen, they had a lovely, throaty sound without being obnoxiously loud. Too bad.
Then again, I'm sure many here will attest that making a muffler is cheap, easy, and the results vary from acceptable to great. I got very lucky. My first attempt turned out exactly as I wanted it.
