I think the best bet for twins would be with sprockets on both motors, driving a jackshaft and axle clutch. You could time the motors/sprockets with where you install the chains, ;)

Might be kinda tough starting some engines this way... Although it'd be a great way to experiment to confirm if synchronizing or 180 off gave the best performance with your engines, karts load and driving situation. I'd probably beleve a stop watch monitoring lap times over any dyno or perceived differences the driver may think he noticed.

Use a regular kart starter on the jackshaft, ;) :D

Yeah I liked the drift of your jackshaft/single clutch suggestion, I was just kinda pointing out one possible drawback the average fun kart rider here on this forum might experience over simply running 2 clutches.

For racers that'd be the obvious solution, but I was just thinking that obtaining a kart starter, transporting it around on the kart and having to deal with simultaneously operating the throttle while cranking by yourself would probably be out of the question for most all of our members here.

Good point, that's about the only viable way I could see to time the motors 180° from each other and have them stay there. Two clutches is probably a better way to go though.

As far as starting goes, i was just gonna leave the pull start on the outside of one of the engines. Since one will be removed to connect to the PTO of the other, just leave the outside one on, and pull both engines simultaneously. Time the engines when you connect the PTO to the flywheel shaft.

Well i have a 1979 motobecane moped that i would like to either put 2 lawn boy v engines on (hence the questioning on connecting two engines, as its not possibly to run 2 seperate clutches and i dont want to spend the money going that route) or 1 engine and a cvt. I'm also toying with the idea of just building a minibike frame with 2 engines due to lack of room on the moped. I'm not too into karts, as i have a 73 challenger to entertain my 4 wheel needs (as well as 3 four wheelers) and my little brother has one of those full suspension jacked up go karts. I have a 2002 Honda 919 that i bought as a project and want to get finished first and foremost, then onto my lawn mower engined projects (i've got a number of briggs and stratton engines as well as a jacobsen 2 stroke)

Although i will build a shifter kart when i run across a 2 stroke motorcycle engine without a title, for a good price.

Good luck finding a good two stroke man. I promise you'll need it. Its either a whole bike, or an ancient engine with no top-end, stator, no carb, no pipe, no coil. Let me know if you find anything worth it.

Shoot i've owned 2 in the past, just had too many projects at the time so i let them go at 100 a piece for the whole bike! Old 2 stroke dirtbikes are what to look for. I live in oklahoma and dirt bikes are EVERYWHERE!

In the meantime if i wreck my 05 kdx200 and bend the frame, ill be in business :)

if you know how to tap and die properly, and you have access to a decent lathe, turning up a piece of stock to use as a connector between the flywheel nut and the cutting disc retaining nut-thread should hold the crankshafts in alignment. this is what i'm planning on doing when i finish up my current projects, or going the whole hog and setting up a v6 out of 170cc victas, all running to a central jackshaft which would then be the driveshaft. all with solid sprockets and chains, which means i'll have the offset down pat to control vibration and low end torque.

You mean 160cc don't you? 170cc Victa twins are worth enough to pay for a custom made engine. Or do you mean bored out 160s?

Thanks

Hayden
