first off i am new to this site. Ok i looked around this site reading some of the post but am still lost in some of this stuff. over the past week i acquired a kart for next to nothing i have attached pictures. the frame is in great shape. the engine starts up. i was piddling around with this kart in my yard to see what all was wrong with it i was told it only needed a clutch come to find out it needs a chain throttle cable throttle tires. so i said ok easy fix then i noticed the clutch was welded on so what i am trying to do is figure out what i can do with a kart like this it going to be used for dirt and pavement only driving. but i want it to have some speed any suggestions to get me started like a good engine to get since it cheaper then trying to rebuild a b and s. i would also like to make this thing last so i can continue to modify it to become a mean racing machine if there was another place that had what i am looking for please feel free to point me in the right direction i only posted here because other then building a frame i am looking for pointers to build this kart pretty much from frame up.

welcome!

ouch.. what idiot would weld a clutch on.. you might be able to grind off the weld though. if not, you either need a new engine, or cut off the crankshaft and replace it

why do you say it needs a new clutch if it has one? (why in the He// is it welded on????)

If the engine runs, why would you want to rebuild it?

I would worry about getting the kart finished before getting into engine modification for more power. We can talk about that later.

EDIT - Blue you beat my post :mad2:

If you look at the front on the clutch where the shaft is you can see it not going to come off easily but I am here to figure out my options or if I should just scrap it and rebuild my 4 wheeler

1. Welcome to the forum.

2. Before uploading pics, can you please rotate them, otherwise they are, literally, a pain in the neck.

I'm with soup on this one; why rebuild the engine if it runs? Also, it may be a little more evpensive to rebuild a B&S but, it'll outlast any clone engine; unless you were thinking of paying even more for anouter B&S. The fun power are great little engines & can be modified relatively cheaply.

For now, get yourself a chain, throttle cable & anything else you may need, get it running then worry about mods

Edit: Guys, look at the second pic. There apperars to be a big bird poop weld on the end of the shaft

That is where my problem starts I don't even now where to look for parts for that engine

Look on the blower housing for your model number and enter it here - http://www.briggsandstratton.com/support/operators-manuals/

That will give you a manual and parts list. Looks like you need an airfilter right off the bat. Try searching your area for local lawnmower/small engine repair shops for cheaper parts.

EDIT - blue got me again...

If your clutch is indeed welded on, probably it was tack-welded at the tip to address some unknown problem.

You should be able to grind the tack weld off, and then the clutch will probably fall right off.

The question is 'why did someone weld on the clutch?'. If it was due to a bad clutch, or possible the PO running out of talent, you are home free. If it was because the crank end was buggered for some unknown reason, you might be looking at more work (and have to evaluate a new set of options).

My advice is to figure out what the heck is going on with that clutch before you do - or spend money on - anything else.

you absolutely correct the clutch was tack welded on looks like with a piece of bar and a washer on the end of the shaft with further investigation it has appeared that someone broke the keyway to the clutch and had to get it to stay on lmao i am from the backwoods but that beats all i have done
