Comet Clutch alternatives ?

Up here in Canada these things start at $300. are there any alternatives say if I had a 15hp motor could I use the clutch set up from a 3-400cc snomobile, or modify/build somthing out of GY6 or other Chinese clone atv's and us on a 6.5hp clone.

LoL. It dont make sense that I can buy a brand new 6.5 clone from princessauto here for $89, but clutch system is 300+. and there's buying one from ebay in the US for $150-$200 but cost $100+ to ship lol.

By clutch, I'm guessing your talking about a torque converter?

I'm going to say nothing is impossible. So basically you could fit a snowmobile clutch, however you would need to make an adaptor piece or mount it to a jackshaft that mimics the output layout of the original engine. So, if your good with a lathe etc then go for it. Otherwise you might find it quite hard to do. You may be bette roff finding a second hand snowmobile engine as a whole unit and using it.

Im confused? What do you want to know. If there is alternatives to a commet clutch? What are you asking about the 6.5 clone?

snowmobiles are high revving motors and have tapered shafts. that wont work.

I dont know bout you northern folks, but I would think a person could check the classifieds plenty, might find something...

It's still gonna cost an arm and a leg. At some point in history it became "normal" to charge $300 for a Comet 40 torque converter. Is a Comet 40 really THAT valuable? I'd think that a brand new 6.5hp Predator motor from Harbor Freight for $100 would have much more value than simple driver and driven pulleys and a belt. Even the Tav2 setup rated for up to 8hp costs more than that. WTF?

It's time to boycott torque converter prices. And this is the place to do it! A clutch should not cost so much! A centrifugal clutch is almost as complex as a torque converter, and they only cost $27...

its pretty much cheaper to find some chinese gy6 or other cvt clone than it is to do a proper comet setup. unless i find one cheap ill not be trying to buy any Comet stuff, for the price i could find a whole go kart. its like the printers and the ink.... ink cost as much as a new printer half the time!

dont worry, since gas prices will never come down, they will have to start allowing small engine vehicles on the road which will increase the demand for small engine CVTs and then the price of them will be driven down. might take 10 or 20 years but its gonna happen... im going to be attempting to street legalize a large buggy kart in the near future, but it wont have a TAV on it! (me likey snowmobile engine!!!!!)

Just grab a sled engine with the clutches, if you lucky you can get one for under $100. much more power as well. The only downside is the extra work that's needed (mounting a jack shaft)

Jackshafts are a piece of cake to make. Get a couple of 5/8" pillow block bearings, some 5/8" rod, your driven pulley and a sprocket... drill a couple of holes (4 to be exact) to mount the pillow bearings, carve out some notches in the rod for 3/16" keys to fit nice and snug... stick it all together, and presto! although with the increased horsepower you might want a bigger rod and pillow bearings (one that matches the bore of the driven pulley pulled from the snowmobile).

i made one on my big kart for a couple of sprockets (to gear it down). took me like an hour, with several breaks. lol.

Princess used to carry the TAV2 before Comet took a vacation. I've been waiting to see if they bring them back, or even a clone. Nothing yet. Also, when Comet went, Princess started stocking Hilliard clutches instead of the Comets.

Anderkart - They do carry comet kits as a special order $300 for like a comet 30. I just found out recently after searching around that you could, just buy the driver/driven and a belt. that knocks off $100 right there for sure. I will inquire Princess auto about that. $200 is more then I want to spend but more doable then 300.

Exenos - Yea I been looking for a sled motor, but I live in the rural area of Okanagan BC. sled parts are like gold here lol.

I've been thinking about a GY6 CVT, anybody mounted one of them to a non-GY6 engine? Have to cut off the crankcase section, but from the outside looks like it's diy-able.

I have a Comet 44C primary with a 1" output if that will work for you. Brand new for $60
