Comet 44c Driver Clutch Stuck Closed?

I recently got a 44c Comet torque converter for my buggy:

But I can't figure out how to get the driver open. I'm guessing it's seized or somehow stuck closed. Everything looks ok. I bought it as new and unused.

Everything I've found for trouble shooting a 40 or 44c online is for Comet knock offs. Not sure if that makes a difference, but I don't know if the insides are much different.

I've tried spraying it with PB Blaster and prying at with my hands. Tried dropping it inside on the carpet a few times.. Also, a few times I tried using a couple 2x4's to put pressure on it (they for almost perfectly in between the sheaves), but I'm afraid of using too much force and possibly bending it breaking something.

I'll post some pictures of it in a couple hours, but it looks exactly like you'd imagine. I'm not home right now.

Here's some pictures. I'm contemplating putting it on the motor and revving it some to see if the weights can force something to move on the inside. I don't want any of the weights or springs to be damaged, but I'd rather they get damaged than risk the body of the driver.

I'm willing to bet the two small holes on the cover that aren't the center hole (for the axle bolt) have something to do with removing the cover. Using a pin spanner, try holding the whole unit and turning the spanner. The cover probably unscrews from the shaft.

As far as which direction to turn it, I would turn it in the same direction as the motor spins.

I did the exact same thing with my 44c. The threads are normal standard threads. And you probable either knocked the spring off or melted the rubber pucks. Those are really hard to break loose but will come apart. I put mine in a vise and was super careful not to bend the back half of the pulley. I made my own tool with a flat plate and some hardened screws drilled in the plate. I Never did get it broke loose to fix it so I trashed it.

Looks like it's open to me, not closed, which is why you can't spread it open further. Stick it on engine see what it does.

Ummm good catch Kansas kart.......... yeah nothing wrong with yours it’s open. Your belt might be the wrong belt or you got the wrong spacing if it’s not staying in spot with a neutral position.
