Comet 40 series belt size?

Hello all
Still working on my Manco 710 and received some parts I ordered. One of which was a new belt. The kart is bone stock with the original subaru 10hp engine and comet 40 series torque converter. The belt I received is a replacement for the original 12346/203785 and according to the manual that should be correct. However, when I went to try and install it, it appears to be way too tight. Nearly impossible to get on and the wheels won’t rotate freely without the belt engaging.
After doing some research I read about sizing a belt correctly by measuring from the center of the jackshaft to the center of the crank shaft. I actually pulled out the engine so I could get a very accurate measurement and I came up with 8 3/4”. There is zero adjustability as the jackshaft mounting plate is bolted directly to the engine.
When I look at the comet belt tables, it shows the 203785 belt is for
8-3/16” C.D. The next size belt, 203786, is for a 8-5/8” C.D. Then the next size after that is for a 9” C.D.
I double checked and it is a comet 40 series with a 7-1/2” driven clutch.
Am I missing something? Is there any reason the manual would call for a smaller belt? And what size belt should I go with?

Why don't you slot the jackshaft mount to achieve the correct shaft distances that Comet recommends? I would get the 203786 belt and slot the holes in the jackshaft plate. Your only talking an 1/8" it would not be hard to do. Or you could keep 203785 belt and slot the plate to get down to 8 3/16". Its your choice. Remember we are talking kids go karts. I don't think they hold very close tolerances when there building these things.

Going with the 203786 and possibly slotting the mount sounds like the most reasonable solution. I just want to make sure I’m not missing something as the measurements don’t match the OEM belt in the manco manual. Seems odd the C.D. measurements I’m getting are 9/16” longer than what the manco suggested belt would support.
Thanks for your response.

My Monster Moto MB212 mini bike belt center distance was like almost 1/2" off too. The jackshaft is welded to the frame so slotting the engine mount was the only option. I'd follow Comet's specs before any go kart/mini bike manufacturer.
