Coleman KT 196 won’t move

Hello,
We have a kt 196, it starts and looks as if the torque converter works well when accelerating. The only problem is the go kart does not move. The chain that is near the torque converter spins but the one attached to the axel/ wheels does not spin. We have lifted the kart off the wheel and it still does not spin. We removed the chain and cleaned it and tightened it no luck. Any ideas what it could be?

Bolt and key loosened up and fell out of small sprocket! Use blue Loc-Tite on bolt threads when you put it back together! We’ve had 3 in the last 6 mos on here!
Which bolt and key? We checked the torque converter and everything was tight. We removed it and re installed it as well and still would move.

TC moves, sprocket on axle does not... must be the jackshaft then.

It's not rocket science

Ya which bolt?
And which key?
The key on the driven unit is like 5” long isn’t it?
I don’t think there is a bolt in the driven unit.

Still don’t know which bolt.
Possibly because I’m not familiar with the kt196 set up.

I could imagine a set screw, or the jackshaft itself…

Does the chain turn when it’s on the ground?
Do both sprockets turn?
I don’t see how the chain can turn in one spot but not the other?

Maybe the chain doesn’t turn, but the little sprocket does?

If the chain turns, but the axle doesn’t, wouldn’t that suggest the axle sprocket is spinning freely on the axle?

This is the only place I see a bolt missing. If this is it do you guys know the size of the bolt and what the lock key may look like or where I can buy it

Maybe this is the bolt Denny mentioned? There
Looks to be something going on here.

I still don’t understand the original description, but from Denny’s response it seems the jackshaft, the little sprocket, and driven pulley are no longer turning together.

The key is just rectangular stock inserted into a slot to keep the jackshaft in sync with the pulley and the sprocket in sync with the jackshaft.

What Bob circled in red is what always seems to fall apart. For some reason that bolt is not looking right to me. We’re not there to see what is or is not turning. Only you can do that. Can you point out in pictures or make a video of what is going on?

We did notice that what you circled is the problem the key/small rod your speaking of is split into two. We took the bolt out and seen that the keys was in two pieces. Do you happen to know what the part name is so I can look for it online. Or where I can buy it online

Yes that seems to be the problem. When we removed the bolt the key that keeps them in sync was split in half. I’m just trying to find the actual part name or where I can buy it online.

As he stated, the key is a universal part, likely available at your local hardware store (Ace or True Value, not Home Depot or Lowes). Take the pieces with you and match them to a new piece.

Like said it is simply called a key. After you install a new one when you go to put a new one in wash the bolt off with some brake clean and wash out the hole the bolt goes into. Let them thoroughly dry or blow dry with compressed air. Then use blue Loc-Tite on the bolt threads and install bolt as tight as you can without breaking it. Use good judgement on torque! No need to hammer on the wrench or jump on it.

5mm is 0.19685 inches. 3/16" is 0.1875 inches. So a 3/16 key will fit within 1/100th of an inch. Close enough for government work and getting the wheels rolling. Let's go!
