Coleman 196 Help

Hello all. I recently inherited a Coleman 196 kart with a Predator 212cc engine. I am having some trouble with fuel leaking from carb bowl drain hose when accelerating. This was happening with an old carb and the new one I just put on. The carb is a Mikuni style Amazon knock off. I have done some troubleshooting including bypassing the fuel pump and having it gravity fed as the tank is higher. Problem persisted. I am hesitant to make floats bowl adjustments because it is a brand new carb and was looking for any suggestions. Any help would be appreciated.

Not being sarcastic. Put the factory carb back on. The Chikuni carbs ( what you have )
have a history of being problematic. The float level may be set too high, allowing too much gas in the bowl. Especially since it's only on acceleration. Just because it's new doesn't mean it's set properly.

Post a pic or two of the carb and the float inside. Like Pancho says, the float might just be incorrectly adjusted

Thanks for the reply’s. Is the float adjustment done by bending the little tang the needle hangs from? I will send some pics when I go to make adjustments.

We could tell you if the float is off if you post a pic of the carb with the bowl off.

Bottom of the carb needs to be clocked at about 2'oclock and the top should be about 7'oclock.

Get the floats and the needle in the pic.

The idea is, when the carb is inverted, the needle stops in its plugged position, stopping the floats, showing us their position when the bowl is filled.

-But with two carbs doing this it sounds like something else. Maybe your vent is plugged?

This is the carb that came on the motor when I got it. The kart had been sitting around for several months with gas in it so I did disassemble and clean with just a spray. First pic is the assembled carb for context. Thanks for the help.

I am hesitant to make floats bowl adjustments because it is a brand new carb

They are meant to be adjusted and tweaked as soon as you buy them. Due to variables such as air density, elevation, ambient humidity, fuel quality and other factors, they cannot be factory adjusted for every person or every situation. The manufacturing quality is another issue in and of itself.….

There’s been untold numbers of Amazon carbs sold that don’t work. Never read the 5 star reviews. Look at the 1 and 2 star reviews (courtesy of W.T.R.)

I was expecting air/fuel mix adjustments but I thought bowl float would be a locked and loaded situation.

Bad or faulty bowl gasket? Warped bowl to carb body mating surfaces?

Forgot also, hows the tip of the needle look? Ill be honest, I HATE that carb. Ive been dealing with one for almost a week and cant figure my issue out. Its going in the parts pile as soon as the Nibbi gets here.

Ghost 212 yes. Perfectly horizontal no. This picture is the Amazon knockoff because it is what I currently have mounted. No leak at idle but heavy leak while driving.

Tip of the needle looks ok to me. Definitely not perfectly horizontal. The pic shows Amazon carb mounted.

Am I fighting an uphill battle (pun intended) unless I can get the carb more horizontally mounted? Can I adjust float to compensate for the fact it would be difficult to get more horizontal because I would lose chain tension? I am willing to buy nicer carb but if the mounting is to angled what would be the point?

Those things are so simple and easy take it off and lower the float level a little. Worst case ya take it off and put it back.

Make sure you bend the right ( tang ). But yes, that is how you adjust the float level.
You want it to " float " up, and shut off the fuel supply sooner.

Here's a good trick for checking float level while it's installed on the engine.

See the bowl drain screw and hose barb? Put a clear hose/tube on there and run the other end above the carb. Open the drain and let the fuel flow into the tube. It will automatically level out and show you the bowl level.

Yes, you have to then remove the bowl to adjust the level and then do it all again, but it's the most precise method.
