I have a honda 20hp motor that has a 1in. x 2 29/32in. shaft. Does anyone know of a clutch that is stong enough and will fit the shaft?

If you do go with a torque converter keep in mind that comet underrates their stuff so a 40 series would probably work just fine on your 20hp motor even though it's only rated for up to 18hp, though if you plan on modding it you may want tougher stuff.

Torque converters are definitely better for off road or heavy weight kart applications but I prefer clutches for on road, race type karts. I searched around for quite awhile before I bought my 1" clutch and I've been very happy with this model:
http://www.kartpartsstore.net/servlet/the-337/The-Noram-Star-Clutch/Detail (his prices include shipping)

Noram makes a couple other very simalar models that are priced higher,
http://www.kartpartsstore.net/servlet/the-376/Noram-Mini-Cup-Clutch/Detail
http://www.kartpartsstore.net/servlet/the-301/Noram-Racing--dsh--Enforcer/Detail but the Star race engines that the top links clutch is made for develops 16 to sometimes as high as 40hp.

I beleve any of these 3 should fit your 2-29/32" long shaft as long as it has the standard sized 1/4" wide X 1/16" deep keyway and also a threaded bolt hole at the end used to hold the clutch on. (but you might ask whoever you buy from just to double check)

hi, newb here. i dont know anything about clutches/torque converters. especially in the world of go karts.
but when someone says clutch on this site, does that mean i can shift a go kart like i do my car with a standard 5-speed?

We usualy mean a externally mounted clutch with no transmission. These freewheel or slip at lower rpm's and then automatically start engaging or gripping more as the engine spins faster.
They look like this pic :http://www.kartbay.com.au/UserFiles/1369-Files/image//Red Clutch SHort Shaft 9 Tooth.jpg

Marvinsanti's pics above in post #5 are of a go kart torque converter system. These work kinda like a regular go kart clutch but have the advantage of a variable ratio. They work a little like a cars automatic transmission, first starting out in a gear ratio for good acceleration and then automatically changing for more top speed.

There's also shifter karts, these usualy have a motor cycle engine with a built in 5 or 6 speed transmission like this one:http://www.rc-trucks.org/racing-go-karts-vortex.jpg

They can be lots, they can be dirt cheap. I recently bought a whole motorcycle for 40 dollars, all it needed was a coil and it runs great, the total cost of the bike was around 70 including an oil change. This motorcycle engine is going in my kart (under build log, kz400 shifter kart project). Putting a transmission like this on another engine is highly not worth it. For the most part your going to have to buy the whole engine to get the transmission, split the cases, take the engine part out, run a straight shaft with where the crank shaft was, so its really not worth it since you could have just left the motorcycle engine intact.

from the picture it looks like a hose clamp! LOL Hope not:arf:

ROFLOL!! no it's not a hose clamp, that was just laying around when I took the picture. I actually used a grinder to make a curve on the base of the pillowblock so that it will sit firmly over the frame tube. It's held in place by two bolts and nuts and the best part the pillowblocks holes are slotted so i can adjust both the belt and the chain tension.
