Hey Guys...

New to Karting so I apologize if this is a noob question.

I just bought a used Go-Kart for my son. He was riding it around this afternoon for about twenty minutes and after we shut it off I heard a sound like bacon sizzling from the clutch. Upon closer inspection the clutch was smoking a bit. Granted he was driving the kart on damp ground and I don't think the kart has been used all summer...but I was wondering if this was normal from the metal getting hot.

Thanks for your input and again I apologize if I sound like a total noob.

Have fun, Be safe...

Sizzling bacon sounds good. Sizzling clutch, no. Sounds like it overheated and started burning, maybe due to the driving conditions. You normally don't want the clutch getting too hot or it'll fry and won't be usable. You might want to disassemble it and check it to see if it's been damaged.

What kind of damage would I be looking for? What are the indicators that would tell me that it's a bad or damaged clutch and it's time for a new one?

I appreciate your reply.

You'll want to check the clutch shoes mostly and see if they're all worn down and maybe the spring or springs, depending on how yours is built. See if you're able to move the shoes outwards by hand as it shouldn't be easy to move them outwards. Check to see if there's lots of clutch shoe powder inside of it. If you can, take some pics and post them up.

that happened with my go kart. I think its because i wasnt revving the engine enough to fully lock up the shoes. Just before the clutch ewngages theres a rattling sound and i think i was dwelling around that rpm for too long cause after i was finished riding it was smoking.
