There is what we call a gear ratio. # of teeth on the axle sprocket divided by teeth on the clutch. usually 6:1 is a good ratio. so 72axle and 12 clutch.
There are a few different sizes of chain and gear though.
Do you already have a kart? Please give us some more info and we can get you a lot more help.
:welcome2:

That really does help. I just counted 72 on the axle..so I know we need a 12 clutch with #35 chain. You are awesome!

Awesome!! It is great to hear that the moms are getting involved too.

Just to make sure on a few things....what is the tyre diameter of the kart you are looking to get a clutch for. Why i ask is that if the tyre is too tall, you might have to gear lower, like 7:1. You should be good to go with 6:1 if the tyres are 15" or less. Or maybe 14" or less

Are you sure that the chain pitch is #35? Just checking, because you don't want to get the clutch and then find out it was a #41

My husband told me it was #35 that I needed. He knows allot about engines and tinkering, etc....but go -karts are a first for him too!1 I LOVE doing this with my boys and learning as we do it!! Not sure aboyt the tyre diameter..but the axle was 10 inches. I wil definitely double check before ordering anything. BTW..What is the best and/or least expersive place to order..e-bay?? advice!

#35 it is then  You can also just measure the diameter of the tyre from the ground to the top of the tyre.

There are several places to order kart related parts, EBay being one of them. You can also check out:

MFG Supply
BMI Karts Huge range, great rices but, they get you with the shipping
Go Kart Supply
Go Kart Galaxy
Go Karts USA

Mfg Supply has flat rate shipping 6.99 all the time on all orders large and small. So try to make one order.
Another great website for parts is AGK .com Affordable go karts. They also have excellent how tos to help you along. I just reassembled a whole engine using their how to. Plus they are in Ca. too
We are in Lakeside just east of San Diego.

Are we discussing this kart? If so, you will probably find it came with a torque converter, not a centrifugal clutch...

Good question I was thinking the same thing. That big kart needs a TC. This thread was last night. and it says she has 4 karts. The other was today.
Funny that you ask that question because on the other thread you posted "it's just clutch, chain, brakes & controls":lolgoku:

well..

technically a TC is a clutch, sure.. it's also indeed torque converter of sorts.

it's also a belt drive, a set of pulleys and even less precise
"silver round thing".
still that's not helpfull (that description matches a rim, steering wheel and a silver dollar)

Sooo, in order to be precise and although CVT (continous variable transmission) would be technically the 'more precise terminology' here.
It's still usefull to point out to get a TorqueConverter instead of a clutch
(which could be mistaken for a womens handbag while I am at exaggerating things;))

Anywhoo.. we need at least some level of precision, to not confuse potential readers;
don't you agree?

So yeah, what's needed is a
"TC instead of clutch"
or to be precise:
"A continuos variable transmission - generally referred to as torque converter - instead of a simple centrifugal clutch"

I did, indeed, order a certrifugal clutch and a chain from e-bay and they just came in the other day. We also fashioned a seat of sorts for my 11 year old and ordered a new carburetor, sine the old one was shot. Next is to rig up a way to secure the gas tank. The brakes are just plates that stop by friction on the wheels, but im not sure if i want to change that..as I have THREE other go-karts to work on as well!!

Scrub brakes work well if they are dialed in
