Clutch smoking

I have a clutch that smokes after riding for a little while. I put it up on a stand so wheels wouldn't be on ground and didn't smoke at least I don't think it did. Rode around for about an 1hr today with it smoking just want to see if it's a big problem or not.

Posted a picture of gears because I heard that can sometimes be a problem. FYI newby so don't know a ton about this stuff but any help would be great.

yepp, this clutch will not live to see next year, that's for sure..

looks like you have a 48T axle sprocket, with the 12T clutch sprocket that's a 4:1 ratio.

Assuming these are 15" wheels and a ~6hp engine the absolute minimum ratio is 6:1 (and that's ALREADY stretching it!)

so you must install a bigger sprocket (namely a 72T axle sprocket) to make that reliable.

clean your clutch, and check the inside.. if it's blued already you also need to buy a new one (maxtorque SS will do [~25 bucks]) basically what you have installed.

PS no, that sprocket is NOT stock... if it was... it was because had a torque converter installed originally (that's quite possible) you can install one but it's more expensive than a sprocket and a new clutch (115'ish for a comet series 30 clone off ebay)

I don't really want to go through the putting new sprocket on so if I get a torque converter it will be okay? Thanks for the response

A TC would work OK if it is a 10T onto a 48T. It is still a bit of a stretch though, even for a TC. IMO, a sprocket change might even be easier than a TC change

Definetly a stretch. From the other thread, http://www.diygokarts.com/vb/showthread.php?t=31515 we can see the tires are really tall for 4.8:1 gears even with a TC.
I am surprised it moves at all, but then again you say it does, you used it for an hour. So actuallly with the 10% overdrive of a TC and those tall tires you would have a heck of a top speed.

Do not smoke the clutch it has been known to cause gas in some people according to the sturgeon general. Replace the axle gear and add a cvt then you will see how much more fun that kart is.

if you have smaller wheels you might be able to get with regearing the torque converter (its very easy, and not like changing the sprocket) for about 10$ you can get an 8t sprocket with a 5/8" ID on it. (that is if you have 40/41/420 pitch chain) the torque converter can come in a bolt on you get on ebay (30 series tav2) and you can get the extra sprocket (if you want) for like $10-$20.

8t 5/8"ID sprocket type C, can get at ombwarehouse, bmikarts, or any place that stocks azuza engineering parts.

Ok what torque converter should I buy? I'm on a budget. And I will need the 8 tooth sprocket for the converter

It's actually an 54 tooth sprocket. So if I take wheels from 19 in to 10-13 would I be okay and not have to replace sprocket?

Ok. yeah. If that is a 54 tooth and you have 10 tooth clutch, you are already at 5.4:1. I would just change the tires. you say they are 19" tall. I would just got to like a 15" or 14" tire. Some guys (itsid) say that will not work but I believe you will be just fine, by only swapping to smaller tires. Sounds like the cheap easy way to go.
Are your wheels 8" or 6"?

Yes the reason I said 14 or 15 is, tire size changes your final drive gearing. So the smaller the tire the lower the top speed.

Ummmn.....WAIT! How do you figure that?

I'm a lil lost here....What in the wild world of sports is so danged hard or expensive about changing a sprocket? And where is ya gonna find two decent tyres.....(collateral damage )...cheaper than one sprocket?

And....are we gonna then go through 12 posts on how to change and seat tires...?(Whew....recovered just in time)....

Pu-leeze....someone enlighten me....

EDIT: .....Nevermind...just took a second look at the crappy set-up...that sprocket isn't even working as is....

He suggested it, I assumed if the guy thought changing an axle sprocket was too much to go through. swapping tires would be easier.

What you really need to look into is being able to move that engine rearward....JMHO.

EDIT: Better yet...that axle....yep....you can dance around a pile of turds all day, throw roses on it....at the end of the day....it's still a pile of turds!
