The clutch I just put on had two small hex screws. One screwed onto the key, and one screwed against the shaft. Do I still need a bolt on the end of the shaft? Is that bolt just insurance? I didn't have any fine thread bolts, which is what I needed, so we have so far just rode without it. I've been checking it periodically, and the clutch doesn't seem to be moving and all is well so far.

I just want to know how important it is. I still plan on installing one. Just curious if it is completely necessary or if it is just insurance in case the other screws fail.

As long as the set screws are tight and the keyway is in place, no you do not need the end of thread bolt. As i recall it was used for a grease zert fitting

Its basically just for insurance. I've haven't used a shaft bolt on my go kart and the clutch is spinning at 5500 rpm about 3 inches from my right elbow. lol. Although I should play it safe and install one, and you should probably too! When installing the shaft bolt (with washer), it would be wise to either put a lock washer on or apply some Loctite on the threads of the bolt so it wont back out.

If installing a bolt, just use the max torque bolt. It comes with a zert fitting and washer. Simply drill a small hole in your shaft and have a self lubing clutch

FYI: The instructions that come with a Maxtorque clutch actually state to use one or the other (either the set screws or the shaft bolt), not both

Thanks for the replies guys. Still keeping an eye on it and it seems to be fine. Shaft bolts don't seem to be loosening. I have tons of bolts, just not any fine thread ones, which is what I need. I may pick one up next time I'm at ace or something just in case.

I hope your running a clutch/chain guard on your engine, otherwise one day you could lose that elbow and feel like :censored:
